When I walked up to the hanging-out hallway this morning, Eric greeted me with, "Mr. Thomas has drum major picked."

"What?"

"And it's not me. Is it you?"

"What? What are you talking about?"

"He picked who it is yesterday. He measured someone for a uniform. Did he measure you?"

"What? No! What, with no interviews? No meeting? How - Where did you hear this?"

"My mom. My mom knows, he told her." (Eric's mother is the president of the band parent association. She outranks and is even more involved than my mother, the secretary.) "I don't think Sarah got measured either."

"...I don't think this can be true. You had faulty information about this before. You said you knew when the meeting was, that your mother told you and she knew. I... I refuse to get all angsty about something that is unconfirmed!"

"Why would he measure somebody for the uniform?"

"I dunno, I mean, maybe it was just for regular uniforms, maybe they need more. Maybe your mom misinterpretted. I mean, let's face it: If it's not you and it's not me, who is it?"

"...Yeah, point. I mean, it could be Adam, but... Oh god, I hope that's impossible."

"What about Greg?" said Dave.

"Greg got into a fist fight in the band room parking lot, and Mr. Thomas knows. Besides, he's a sucky section leader."

There was a pause.

"I think you're lying Eric," I said. He didn't respond.

I felt sick for the rest of the day. I want this way too badly. I am going to be crushed if I don't get it for real. It seems like I am crushed too often. Why am I so goddamn emotionally invested in marching band?

Other news: I don't do anything in Hoffman's class anymore. I sit there and talk to Dave for an hour and a half every day. I also haven't been doing the homework recently. Shit. I am going to have to catch up with that. Also, had a conversation with Alicia and Molly yesterday about how much of a possibility there is that Julian is gay. After he left for the hill today, earlier than usual, Alicia implied that she had planned to ask him outright. I hope she was joking.
