…never forget.

Telling the story of how Dotty made this Quilt Panel for the AIDS Quilt.

There were several small pieces of muslin that AIDS Walk participants had signed. They hung around for years, and no one did anything with them. Dottie cut around the well wishes and Put them on 12 inch blocks. She then made matching 12 inch heart blocks. I put the sashing around the edges, and the sturdy canvass. George installed the grommets so this panel could be joined to others.

This is the finished panel.

A 12" block looks really big when you are holding the quilt in front of you.

In 1979 I had my first hip replacement. In those days, they didn't do that procedure just every place...it was just out of "experimental" category. I lived in North Dakota. My doctor said I'd have to pick on of three hospitals that he could refer me to...The one I chose was Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Long story short, I had to have a lot of blood transfusions. They asked me to give permission for my blood to be used in a study they were doing... I periodically sent them blood samples for a few years. Later, when we told about the AIDS virus spreading, I felt like my blood was being used in their studies... but it must have been clean. Don't know if it helped, but I'd like to think that somehow, eventually, my little bit would contribute to the cure.
