The greatest thing happened to me this morning. I can say it’s the greatest because deep down I’m still an insecure 15-year-old girl at heart. One who craves the attention of a cute boy and still gets butterflies when that happens.
So this morning, after I dropped the pup off at daycare, I wanted to get some gas station coffee for my commute to work…you know the stuff, you can mix all kinds of flavored cappuccinos and vanillas and other flavors with other kinds of coffees. I’d say it’s similar to a suicide soda, only with coffee.
Anyway, there’s a very special gas station close to downtown and between where I drop off my dog and where I get on the highway to make my commute to work. It’s so special that the tagline of the company is “Where Dreams Come True” which I find hilarious because it’s a GAS STATION. Still, it’s actually famous for the cuisine that it sells in the same building through a window on the side.
ANYWAY.
I stopped to get a quickie suicide coffee (and if truth be told, some smokes…which I sometimes enjoy on my commute as well..shhh), so I parked near the front door and walked in and around to the coffee makers. I clearly wasn’t awake yet because I couldn’t find the paper coffee cups so I could make my special blend.
Up walks a man who immediately reaches UP on top of one of the special coffee makers and I was all, “OH! That’s where those are.”
And he said, “Yeah, they’re kind of difficult to find…“
I turned and took one look at him and was SMACKED completely upside my heart. This guy was SOOOOOOOOO handsome. I immediately got nervous. Like, jittery nervous and goofy and school-girlish.
I tried to make small talk while I reached up and grabbed a paper cup and started in on my fancy special mix of flavors. He recommended a special coffee (I was so nervous I can’t remember what it was), and I was like, “Yeah, I’m going to mix these together…“
DORK ALERT!! It felt like hours were going by and I was turning into a complete idiot!
He said, “I come here because I get my coffee for free. I work for the city and they give city employees free coffee.”
I couldn’t stop staring at his gorgeous head of thick, wavy brown hair and his beautiful smile. He was tall and big and obvi strong because he told me that he worked on all of the air conditioners in the courthouse buildings. I noticed his shirt, embroidered with the city logo and then his name, Jorge S.
I said that I bet he’s heard some interesting stories working in those buildings. Then I said I was familiar with both of the courts he was talking about because I’d been in them both…from a JURY perspective, NOT from a needing-to-be-in-court situation, of course.
DORK, DORK, DORK!!!
He smiled really big and said that yes, he’s heard a LOT of stories.
And then we needed to part ways. He started to walk away and then turned to me and said, “You’re very pretty.”
And I shot back, “You’re VERY handsome.”
I turned and I died a million little crazy, giggly deaths while walking over to the glass doors that held the water. I wanted to grab some Perrier before I went to the counter, but I couldn’t find any. I was a mess. I walked alllllll the way around all of the glass door’d refrigerators. I couldn’t think straight. I could barely SEE straight.
But dude wasn’t leaving. He was walking around the store too, seemingly aimlessly! At one point, we almost bumped into each other!!!
I wanted him to leave so I could go up to the register and ask for a pack of cigs so I could de-stress on the way to work. I certainly wasn’t going to buy smokes in front of the guy! But I walked around the store some more and so did he. I picked up a breakfast bar and then put it back down. I walked around the fridges some more.
FINALLY dude left. I grabbed a Smart Water (hahahah!) and made my way to the counter and asked for cigs, paid my damage, pocketed the cancer sticks and walked out the door…where Jorge was kind of standing there waiting by his white truck with the city logo on it.
I melted and waved. He waved back.
I got in my car and died a million more exciting yet achingly heartbreaking deaths. Because I’m 15 and longing.
We both drove off into the morning fog, and my day was absolutely made.
Dreams absolutely do come true at that gas station. I will go there again.
