p1. It’s not a hard question. Just tell me what you think of this cup, how do you feel about it?

p2. I’m not sure what to say, I mean it’s just a cup. A coffee cup. It’s roundish, cream colored maybe white.

p1. No, no. I’m not asking you to describe it, just tell me in a very general sense how you feel about this non-sentient cup.

p2. I guess I don’t feel any certain way about the cup. You said it, it isn’t alive, why would I have any feeling about it one way or another. It’s just vanilla to me, it doesn’t mean anything. If it didn’t exist I wouldn’t be happy or sad about it, I wouldn’t feel a goddamn thing about it. It’s like a rug in a chain hotel that you don’t even remember walking over, but you’re sure that you probably did. Because the odds that they have a rug there heavy outweigh the odds that they don’t. It’s a complete afterthought, something you would only think about if/when asked. It isn’t something that you actively think about. It’s a vessel, it’s a tool an object meant to serve a purpose without being noticed one way or the other. It’s nice enough that you wouldn’t comment on the blandness of it, but it isn’t flashy enough to be commented on either. It just exists to serve a purpose, it’s utilitarian and that’s it. It feels like a dream that you don’t feel necessary to comment on… Why, you ask yourself do I even dream if it’s just the everyday mundane things that I do already, jesus christ I can’t even dream big. I dream about taking out the rubbish and shopping for paper towels.

p1. How can something that you feel nothing about bring up such emotion? You were literally the most worked up I’ve ever seen you in the many months that we’ve been meeting up and talking. Can you explain that? Can you explain why politics, sports, and modern entertainment, things which stir up conversation in 95% of the population are meaningless to you, but a cup not worthy of mention or notice brings out such emotion? Can you explain it, because I can’t, I don’t even know where to begin?
