“Sheppard, don’t the bible have real specific things to say about killing people?”
“Yes it does. But it’s fuzzy on kneecapping.” — Firefly

“Someone tries killing you, you kill em right back.” — Firefly

My firefly quotes might be a bit off. Sure I’ve seen the show a billion times but not recently. It just popped up randomly. Sort of. The mind is always chewing some sort of cud, so the idea of a thought popping up is the least random thing that happens in our heads, the nature of the thought maybe less so. It’d be more random if I’d only seen the episodes 999,999,999 times.

Princess Bride I can probably quote backwards and it’s been at least fifteen years since I’ve seen that. When my kids argued over what sort of movie to watch Princess Bride was the only common ground.

It would have been difficult to have tried raising the kids with their mother. Princess Bride would have been too violent, sexist, maybe racist and whatever ism, schism or schmism was popular in the day. We all were going to lie to her about whatever we watched anyhow. I know, this paragraph makes the seahag seem ridiculous because everyone has a soft spot in their heart for princess bride. But I think the idea of monitoring what kids watch is … a slippery slope.

Monitoring is benefit of the doubt. At the time I leaned towards calling that censorship, still do, but the general rule of thumb is to be reasonable. The downside to putting your foot down and telling your kids what they absolutely are not allowed to watch is that it plants the idea in any child with normative development that whatever you’re censoring is the coolest thing ever. A broader general rule of thumb is when talking to children or dogs don’t use a negative. I don’t mean that to be all touchy feely, though you should touch your kids and dogs that’s a big piece of development, I just mean in the sentence “Don’t Do (That)!” the operative word is (That). Please Do (This) is a lot more effective way of getting a kid, dog or congressman to Not Do (that). Probably works for senators too. I don’t know, if I hung out with congressmen and senators I’d be saying please do this all day long and probably that will rot your brain and get your grubby paws out of the cookie jar.

Despite being famous for a silly commercial role (columbo) Peter Falk had a pretty interesting career. Princess Bride and Wings of Desire are not the sort of thing you expect from a prime time actor (though the face of prime time has changed, now it’s not uncommon for big screen actors to go to the small screen. It used to be uncommon.). In Wings of Desire (Christ I hope I got that right) Peter Falk played Peter Falk as himself as a fictional character (or was he?). I’m not going to spoil the movie, but I expect everyone has seen it. If you haven’t you should. It hurts a little bit, I mean there’s a lot of reading to it, but if you can hang it has it’s rewards. I’m a bit biased, I love everything Wim Wenders has done.
Yeah, so, I’m typing to move positions, I don’t really have anything to say. Um, move positions and trying to direct the chewing of thought cud away from random. I think I’m batting .500.
