ER and my Second Narcotic Sunday, April 01, 2007
All moved in!
Saturday Night/Sunday Morning I went to the ER again. This time I wasn't leaving with out answers.
I walked in and they recongnized me. I was the only one there! I told them again, I was having admoninal pain and back pain again. They took me back after interigating me in triage. I tried over and over to explain to them it did NOT feel like gas pains. It's pain up under my diaphram and in my upper and lower back and in my right arm. It's pain! NOT cramps. I know the difference. Of course I was nice and polite. (which gets me no where) They gave me some thing that looks like a dirty girlscout drink from the bar, except it taste like chalk and garbage. With in 15 seconds my toungue is numb. She said it would numb my GI track. Again, is anyone listening? I have no need to pass gas. However, I do feel the need to vomit. So they give me something for nausea in which I dropped one pill so they had to give me another.
Then the doctor comes in. "Soo, refresh my memory. You were here last week and blah blah blah." I explain to him what happened last week so he asks, "And the blood work and ultra sound came back clear?" He said this with a half grin like he's thinking, "just fart you'll feel better." And I looked at him and said, "I had no blood work and I had no ultra sound." With a surprised look he said, "Oh, lets do some blood work."
So the nurse pokes me and takes my blood and disappears. An hour or so later the doc comes back and says, "everything is clear, except it looks as though your liver is enlarged. Now we must call the radiologist and do an untra sound. Also you seem a bit dehydrated so we are going to start an IV. " I couldn't help but think, "Sweet! My very first IV. If I am not sick, at least I am beginning to look it!"
I was thinking, "thank god... finally someone is actually going to look for something wrong... besides gas." So an hour and a half later and (of course) right as I am about to dose off they come in and wheel me into the xray room. So it begins. When she finally got to my gall bladder she points out a shadow on the screen. "That's a gall stone, which is probably the reason you are here."
So after that they bring me back to my room. My doctor comes in and is all kinds of nice to me. He says, "Your gall bladder is full of gall stones. We are going to have to remove the gall bladder." I couldn't help but want to cry in relief. The pains I was feeling weren't just me being over-sensitive to gas pains. I was right! I really was right to come into the ER.
He tells me he'd be glad to keep me there (at the hospital) if I wanted until the surgery, or I could go home with Vicodin. I chose the narcotic and went home. On monday I call and schedule my surgery for this week. I can't wait. I pray that this solves all my IBS problems too. I read online that gallstones are sometimes mis-diagnosed as IBS. I may be feeling better soon! You have NO idea how relieved I feel.
I love my new apartment.

Good luck! Just an FYI though. I had my gallbladder out years ago and I still have IBS. However, I do feel better. [Hormone Hell] 4/1/2007 6:49:07 PM
you make sure your insurance does NOT pay for that last visit. they should have done these things and left you in pain for extra days by laughing and telling you that you had gas. i am so glad you went back! prepare for some pain and make sure someone is there to help you after surgery. you wont want to move for awhile. I had gallstones and was misdiagnosed every time I went to the emergency room- I was also treated like a piece of crap. Eventually the untreated gallbladder problems led to pancreatitis- I almost died and spent almost 3 months in the hospital. It makes me so mad to read about gallbladder stuff being misdiagnosed- that pain is so much worse than gas! I am so glad you finally got answers [bluewaters] [p] 4/1/2007 10:30:53 PM
Yee-ouch! I'm glad you found out what was causing your pain.

I knew it was gall stones. Thats why last time i left the message for you that I didnt believe your doctors. I should of said something but since im no doctor and didnt want you to worry about something that potentially wasnt the problem i thought not to. Bad choice.

Oh man... that gallbladder stuff is nothing to play around with. Just try to take it easy until your surgery. [Soul Karma] [p] 4/2/2007 7:24:17 AM
Wow! That sounds serious. I'm SO glad they figured out what was wrong. I can see why you'd be relieved. [klu_v] 4/2/2007 9:34:16 AM
GREAT ! That is so good that you finally got answers. I tip my hat to you for being so persistent. Sometimes it seems like that is the only way that the Doctors will listen and do real tests. And that is what is so irritating. Good Luck with surgery and a speedy recovery. Hope it helps. [baby robin] 4/2/2007 11:24:51 AM
