How Sweet It Is in Never Say Never

There are two moments each day now that feel sweeter than the rest: the moment I take off my work clothes and pull on my soft, loungy clothing for the rest of the night, and that moment right after I turn out the light, close my eyes, and snuggle deep into my fluffy bedding in the dark. Those are the sweetest moments of my sweet days.
At 11 a.m. my boss and I decided we needed to go home. Snow had been falling hard for a couple of hours and traffic out our window seemed to be crawling. We quickly wrote some subject lines for a popular food chain’s email blast and headed out. The roads were worse than we’d imagined, and I drove down the tollway with the rest of the 2,000-pound turtles. Twenty mph was the max speed. No one dared act like an ass. There were no accidents in the southbound lane. The same wasn’t true for the northbound stretch.
I stopped in the grocery store right off the tollway for some fruit and greens and sushi, and carefully crept the rest of the way home in my tiny gerbil car. Happily I made it safely and now here we are – the dogs and I – ensconced on our sofa with a roaring fire and Dr. Phil. Tiny snowflakes still fall outside. And though I feel kind of lonely and wish I were tucking in with someone I love this weekend, this is no second-rate situation. It’s mine. All mine. I made it. I adore it. And it’s so, so sweet.
