Not surprisingly, I have returned with yet another one of these music-related entries. Today's music still sucks. I have once again found myself scurrying back to the music of yesteryear.
This entry brings us back to the year, 1981.
For this entry, I present to you this classic, performed by the group, Con Funk Shun.
Straight From The Heart
Straight From The Heart was released in 1981, from the group's eighth studio album, perhaps ironically titled, "7". Previously, Con Funk Shun had gone by the name of Project Soul, which formed all the way back in 1969. In the mid-1970's, the group changed their name to Con Funk Shun.
Public Announcement covered this song back in 1998. This version of the song appeared on Public Announcement's album, "All Work, No Play". For the record, I do not care for this version of the song. For all intents and purposes, I will stick to the Con Funk Shun original.
When I listen to this song, I hear the simplicity of the words, though the emotions behind these words might be especially complex. While the feelings might be easily felt deeply from within, the expression of one's love to another may not necessarily flow as easily when we take those feelings and try to put them into words. The song's opening verse starts off simply, but also perhaps accusatory, as it assigns responsibility where it needs to be.
There's a spell on my mind
And you're to blame
Nothing else in my life
Will ever be the same
One does not need to use big words or complicated phrases to tell their beloved how they feel about them. For as much as I love this woman, I don't want language, grammar, or syntax to get in the way. I want to tell her exactly how I feel about her, without being confusing. Yes, she has put a spell on my mind and clearly, I'm going to tell that it's her fault and she is responsible for it. This sort of accusation is a good thing and rest assured, I am not complaining.
It's a simple concept, all told. Tell her how she makes me feel. Tell her that I am thinking about her all the time. Tell her that I will love her for as long as she wants me to. I suppose I could become a bit poetic with her when I tell her that I would pull a star from the sky if she were to ask me to.
The bottom line is that this song makes feel the love that I have for her.
This really is about as simple as it gets. Speak strongly. Speak truthfully. I will express myself to her, without fear or hesitation, and let her know exactly how I feel, making sure that I'm being direct and coming straight from the heart, much like this song does.
This is straight from the heart
No one could ever doubt
My love will last 'til the end of time
Of time
