Dragonflies in The View from the Terrace

We had a great evening at our folk club on Tuesday, there were a lot of people there. We meet in a lovely old pub in the village of Longtown in the foothills of the Black Mountains about 6 miles from here. It is just below Offas Dyke Path which follows the border between England and Wales across the first range of mountains and is very popular with walkers, so we get a lot of holiday makers in the area. Often they hear about the folk night and come for a drink. Some of them even do a song for us.

I learned a new song for our last evening. I came across it while listening to Spotify in the shower. It’s a song called dragonflies and has been covered by an Irish singer called Eleanor Shanley. I wasn’t sure at first if it was the right sort of song to do there, especially as the majority of our members are elderly. It’s rather philosophical and muses upon the fact that we are all here for a very short time. I was practicing the song at home and wondering whether I should do it. Then I had a break and went out to the garden to put the washing out. A dragonfly landed on the washing line! I felt the song wanted to be sung. I’m glad I did sing it because one of the visitors came over and said what a beautiful song it was.

I have seen a lot of dragonflies in the garden this year. This afternoon I was watering the flowers and I saw two. One was a beautiful peacock blue colour and the other had black wings and a blue body. They were so beautiful. I sat on our garden bench and watched them for ages.
