I’ve noticed one big difference between Ontario and BC: the people’s attitude toward getting things correct. Said another way, the BC attitude is “oh, it will work itself out,” or “close enough.” That is very irritating. No one wants to lift a finger to get things right. It is a lazy approach to business and government. It’s particularly irritating for a person who worked his entire career in Ontario, where we take things a little more seriously.
So I gave the guy on the phone a bit of a bad time yesterday. He first told me that the number of bedrooms and bathrooms does not impact the value of a home. Really? Maybe not the appraisal value, but certainly the market value. So I learned that the appraisal office takes a lazy approach to determining the value of a unit. For them, it does not matter if the place has one bedroom and one bathroom or two of both. Mumble jumble, blah blah blah; the more I listened, the more upset I got with the guy. When I mentioned that the square footage was off by more than 5%, that got a little more attention.
At the end, I asked what we were both going to do about this problem. What are the next steps? That surprised him. He thought he had the problem solved with a phone call and an explanation. I need the information to be correct before I am satisfied. Impasse.
So I’ve had similar experiences with a lawyer and now a government office. Even the way the developer handled the parking issue seemed so casual. “We’re going to give you guys some spots that are left over. That will solve your problems.” Not really. But we’ll take it.
Now Cherie wants to see if she can get the line repainted. I want to say, ‘we won’t stand in your way.’ It’s her problem not mine. If she wants me to get involved I will tell her just that.
