Nigella. Love-in-a-Mist.

I have some of this in my little plot, but it is being overwhelmed by the wild lupine. Where I took this is about a block away from my garden.

Can I just say…my brain is full. I am not sure if this is age related or because I need a vacation but there is so much stuff in my head that it can be a challenge to think things through, and I find it particularly frustrating with practical things.

A few years back I got this simple seed starting thing, which basically consisted of the long, big-lipped plastic tray with a plastic cover. I can’t remember what else was in there. I got a simple clip-on light source. I put it next to a west facing window that is waist height because that is what I have. I have grown all sorts of leggy things in this array. Sweet peas, tomatoes, cosmos.

Things that make me inordinately happy.

Earlier this year I got some deeper seed trays with plugs and grew a whole bunch of out-of-control sweet peas. Some of which are now in the garden barely hanging on. I have known for a while I needed more light to grow more robust seedlings.

About 6 weeks ago, maybe five I took a random assortment of seeds I had around and filled up one of the deep seed trays with seed starter soil just to see what would come up. I turned the lights on every day but was a little hesitant to over water so I was mostly misting it.

Nothing came up. In like fifty cells, none of those seeds germinated.

I was sharing this frustration with Mr. Boulder last weekend. We had taken the bus out to my favorite co-op nursery plant place and picked up a small assortment of things to add to my garden. He planted them after we discussed location and then when I wasn’t looking, he took my secateurs and started pruning this august old rosemary that has languished in a public place in the garden for years.

The garden manager had come by as we got there and told us it was fine to do this.
He did a good job. (We are talking now about planting a little group of other herbs around it.)

We sat in the shade under the big oak for a couple of hours and talked and talked but in the end, he needed a restroom and there isn’t one in the garden, so I took a flyer on this rather remarkable person and brought him home to my place. I had talked to Walt about doing this beforehand to see what his take on the possibility was.

I had been telling Mr. Boulder about the show Gardeners’ World and the upcoming Chelsea Flower show. I pulled the latest episode up on my iPad and we ended up sitting on the futon and watching the whole thing. It was fun! He has a whole different set of garden knowledge than I do and we compared notes.

Carlo though, was not amused. He did not hide, but he also warily stayed in the other room.

Next thing I know Mr. Boulder is looking at the seed tray and we are talking about what I did and didn’t do and he asked if he could reseed it. He ran a big green house in prison and grew a lot of stuff, mostly food, and knew exactly what he was doing. He used the random selection of seeds I had started with, what was left.

A couple of days ago I took the other set of clip-on grow lights I got weeks ago out of the box and hooked them up.

Yesterday morning just before class I took a look at the seed tray and be still my heart, there are things beginning to sprout.

I seriously haven’t a clue what is going on here. Mr. Boulder called it “our thing” in a text this week. I do know that we are investing in each other. Where that goes is one big mystery.

All this is going on even though it wasn’t until last night that I realized the cover for the seed tray has been sitting in the other room all this time.

Hmmm.
