So, I have something of a “please tell me what you would recommend” situation.
I hate writing on my phone and I don’t enjoy writing on tablets.
But when I get downtime to read, I tend to write instead because I have long since trained my mind/body that reading is passive and writing is active; therefore, instead of “If you have time to lean, you have time to clean” I have an internal “If you have time to read, you have time to write!” Which is silly on over a dozen different grounds. Perhaps not least of which is that I try to read for my enjoyment or my information. And writing is mostly… therapeutic, communicative, or to keep my mind active.
Here are the three tricks to that issue:
(1) I have fallen devastatingly behind in reading people’s Proseboxes. And while I understand and appreciate people being understanding about it; it also has a psychological affect. For better or worse, most of you people are my closest friends. We’ve never met. For 98% of you, I wouldn’t recognize you if you were sitting across from me. And as much as I’d like to get a coffee with each and every one of you- statistics suggest I will never meet any of you in person ever. And yet… most of you are my closest friends. And it is a bad friend that doesn’t keep up with their friend! Not to mention, the best way to get someone to stop thinking about their own problems all of the time is to get that person’s focus on the people around them! Not that such a thing doesn’t carry its own issues as I must always be on guard for co-dependence and the like. BUT there is nothing more blatantly “If you have time to read, you have time write!” then Prosebox. It is my hope that if I were to have a device that I enjoy reading on but despise writing on.... I may fall into better habits reading and not writing.
(2) I have set myself a reasonably attainable goal to read more. I’m not even asking myself for anything outstanding! A book a month, with scripts counting only for one month. Currently on my “READ US” pile lives at least 8 books and I already have 2 scripts read for this year. BUT books versus something like a tablet carry their own positives and negatives. Don’t get me wrong, there’s something loving, romantic, and relaxing about a physical book. A rainy spring or summer day in a 3 season room, sipping tea and reading is HEAVEN. TRULY throw in a dog sleeping peacefully and a beautiful woman reading in the same room and that is how I want to spend my eternity! BUT that’s just the thing. To be in a “I will ignore everything else going on, grab this book, and read it” place… it has to be so specific and planned and put together for me! It is my hope that if I were to have a device that I enjoy reading on but isn’t literally lugging books around… I may be able to squeeze in “reading a page here or there” throughout my day as opposed to carving out large sections of the day to devour “as much of the book as possible in one sitting.”
(3) I have a vacation coming up in a few months. A vacation with my family. A vacation with my family whereby we travel by plane. On the plane, in the hotel, etcetera will be plenty of opportunities to read. Of course, carrying enough books for the trip will be physically impossible with today’s modern baggage restrictions. Thus, it is my hope that if I were to have a device that I enjoy reading on but is a sleek, thin, electronic device… I would be better able to read on the upcoming trip!
AND THAT is where my “please tell me what you would recommend” comes in! What would you recommend? I know it is easy to just shout “iPad” or “Kindle” or whatever but… I’m hoping for more, if that’s a fair ask. Like… if you have experience with the SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab S10 FE and can make a case for why it is worth over $300, I want to hear it. If you have experience with the Amazon HD Fire 8 and you think that it was annoying with apps but accessed the internet well enough, I want to hear it. Just… share your opinions and let me know what you would recommend, what you would recommend against- anything.
THANK YOU!
