A much less drama filled week. We have had unusual weather. Sunny and dry but cold. Our snowpack is low low low and that is not good, not only for skiers but for our water supply. It looks like we have only one more day of this and then we return to regularly scheduled programing only with slightly less rain than normal. We will get a hard freeze eventually, which affects the insect population and the whole growing season… Small mercies in a crazy world.

Although we had plans to walk this morning Mrs. Sherlock has decided to stay warm at home and rest. I am glad she isn’t pushing herself as this is such a vulnerable time for her, but I miss seeing her.

I am doing this not helpful thing of focusing on what I am not getting done and not paying any attention to what I am actually doing.

When we went to the vet in November, she mentioned Carlo’s arthritis. He hides it well, but after that I noticed that he was finding assists to get up on things and occasionally missing when attempting to get up on the kitchen or bathroom counters. Places I have been trying to keep him off of since he came to live with me 12ish years ago.

Diego was the guy in charge when he was alive, and he insisted that he would only drink water from an open saucepan on the stovetop. Carlo went along to get along. I had to do that when we were displaced as well. A saucepan. For water.

After I noticed that Carlo was having trouble getting up on things I thought oh geez, I need to give him fresh water in a place that is accessible to him now. I had read that it is always best to have the water bowl away from their food. (He likes to cover any wet food he has left for later and that would get messy with the water bowl there as well as naturally not best.)

So, I picked a glass storage bowl and put it on the floor next to the stove. It took him a few days to get it but now he drinks plenty of water as it appeals to him and he has completely given up getting on the counters!

I tried so hard to keep them both off the counters when I adopted them, egg cartons, baking sheets, (to this day he is afraid of those) and all I had to do was wait 11 plus years. Who knew?

Now if I could just teach him not to get up on my part of the workstation when I am working. He pesters me; technically, he pesters my hands. He is obsessed with my hands. You would think that is all I am, hands.

Well, and legs, He likes to spawl across my legs if he knows I am going to stay put. Which, I rarely do.

We all listened to Mark Carney’s Davos speech here and have been talking about it. What a relief to hear someone sane tell the truth. Thank you.

I only had one in person League meeting this last week. (Yay!) I had two Zoom League meetings, one work related, one about our Preschool for All program implementation (which was impressive). I went to the gym for cardio. I taught my classes. I hung out online with Walt (in Mexico) and the guys for Coffeeshop Philosophy. I went to the dentist and the grocery to pick up a couple of things I missed in my delivery.

So, you know, it is not like I am not doing things. My weight has been stable for two months and that has been effortful. At least it feels that way.

But this next week I need to settle in and focus and get some of the things I am not getting done accomplished so I can move towards next summer and getting out from under this huge obligation I got myself into.

I am not counting the days yet, but I am counting the months… February, March, April, May, June and then…
