All In A Day's Work Pt. 2 Friday, February 25, 2005

Today was a pretty crazy day at work. I was alone in the office for most of the day. One of my co-workers had to take her daughter to the doctor, so that left me alone.

For anyone that doesn't know, I work for an apartment complex. The company I work for actually has two complexes in the same town. I actually used to live and work at the other one. Now I am at the other one working and living. Occasionally, the other complex will transfer phones to us while they go on showings, take lunch, and various other things. Today they transfered phones around 3pm. Thinking nothing of it I almost had it completely out of my mind. However when the phone rang there was a lady on the phone. She asked me if everything was alright. I said yes. She then asked if anyone was hurt. I said not that I know. Then asked her why. She asked me if there was a fire. I said not that I know of. I explained to her if I heard anything I would call and let her know. click

"Riiiing" (that's the phone ringing again) I asnwer it again and another person asks about the fire. This time I know something must be up.... er... burning down. So I paged my maintenance men. They didn't know so I asked them to find out. Meanwhile all my lines began to light up with phone calls. One by one I put people on hold. The maintenance men page back confirming a fire.

Then at about 3:30 all of a sudden I find my self answering the phones non-stop because the news aired it.

Me: Building number? Them: A Me: your are fine, it's not your building.

Me: Building number? Them: C Me: You're ok, not your building.

Building number?: A... B... C... E... A.... B.... C.... J..... F.... G.... A.... B.... H..

Silence on the phone from me..

Me: You are in building H? Them: Yes. I am in H. Me: Unfortunatly, yes. It is your building.

(SOBS)

So, ended up having to tell 3 people that called that their home was gone.... and I do mean GONE. (I said it nicer than that!)

I was almost in tears. I was feeling so bad for these people. Finally the phones got transfered back to the other complex and I headed down there to help get these people into vacant apartments. These poor people lost EVERYTHING. No one was hurt. Except one man that jumped from the third floor. That man was holding a baby. (not when he jumped) and another man from the apartment below him grabbed the baby and climbed down the balcony with the baby. It's amazing what will happen in emergancies. People are really good people at these times. The man that jumped was about 270 pounds. One man already on the ground actually tried to help break his fall. All people were saved. All animals were saved. All hearts are broke.

Cause of fire: Not confirmed as of yet. However, they know the apartment number where it started and they are 99.9 percent sure it was a child playing with matches. It breaks my heart.

Fact: out of the 24 apartments only 2 people had renters insurance. If you don't have renter's insurance right now. Get it. NOW. It can be as low as 10 bucks a month. It's strange to me. Houses are required to have insurance. However, apartments are not and apartments can have 24 differenent families living in an area. Do you trust your neighbors that much?

Anyway... it's late. Pray for these people.
