Rain on Parade Day in Musings and Misgivings

We live in a little community called Highland Park, and our apartment is next to the bridge leading to South Pasadena. I love Pasadena. It is such a beautiful city, rich in history and amazing architecture. In my entire life, I have never been to the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. My mom always said that she had no inkling to camp out outside, sometimes days in advance, just to get a good spot.

This year, there will be rain. There is a strict rule that umbrellas are not permitted. I know it’s just rain, but I don’t think that sitting in pouring rain for hours is my idea of fun. Frankly, I gave up watching the parade after my mom died.

I went to the Doo Dah parade in Pasadena two years ago, and that was right up my alley! Thousands of fellow weirdos all come out to celebrate art and free thinking. There’s a funny ritual attendees participate in- throwing tortillas at the passing floats and marchers. People really get into it!

The parade was cancelled this year due to the Eaton fire, and government cuts to the educational organization that the parade benefits. I was sorely disappointed, but I am looking forward to next year.

I hope those that are attending the Rose parade tomorrow manage to have fun, in spite of the rain.
