Junk in Musings and Misgivings

I have decided I want to get into junk journaling. I have long been into scrapbooking and also have been creating collages for as long as I can remember, so I thought I could maybe blend the two.

But then I wonder if I really NEED another hobby on my plate. I got a sewing machine for my birthday back in June, and started collecting fabric and notions. I have grand plans for upcycling old textiles into new things, like cool reusable shopping bags, clothing, and home décor.

I wrote the above yesterday, and then didn’t get around to finishing the entry before I moved along and did some reselling work. This morning, I mentioned to Rick that we needed dish soap and toilet paper. I asked if we could go to Dollar Tree so we could grab some needed things.

After we finished our morning walk/smoke session, we got dressed and headed out. I asked if I could get a journal and some pens, and he told me that we could get a few things. So after getting what we went for, I carefully chose two spiral notebooks and a set of 8 pens with colorful ink, and all for 3.75. I was stoked. I was also able to grab a can of Hormel chicken tamales, which I have heard are actually really good, a big box of cavatappi pasta, a jar of pesto, some onion soup mix, and a few bags of salad toppers.

I like having a full pantry, with versatile items I can use to whip up meals out of bits and bobs. I always have baking supplies at the ready, although, in the coming months, I am going to be backing off of sweets almost completely. So desserts will be out. But I do want to learn how to make my own tortillas, so we can use those as a lower carb option instead of bread. We have a lot of canned corn, and beans currently, and I am hoping Rick will make chili for New Years Day. The way he cooks, it’s always a very large volume, and we end up eating what he prepped for about a week. Usually there is enough left to freeze for later.

We still have Christmas leftovers, and I don’t want anything to go to waste, so I threw banana muffins in the freezer yesterday. I will likely freeze the rest of the green bean casserole and the hash brown casserole this afternoon. We have been whittling down on the mac and cheese, but he happened to make it in a roasting pan, and I fear I will have cheese and cream running through my veins before we can finish it, so in spite of his insistence that we eat it until it is gone, I might very well freeze that, as well.

We also went to Ace Hardware today, on a mission to find houseplants for the apartment. He has experience with plants and went in knowing exactly what he wanted, and then my chaos gremlin self decided I wanted to replant a succulent bowl we got at a yard sale, so I added two small succulents, special soil, and I attacked the Christmas clearance and found an engagement ring ornament, and also an adorable Kiss-Mas ornament, both for less than two dollars. One of the plants was not on his list, but we were both instantly attracted to was something known as the “Nerve Plant”. He Googled it, and there was a little blurb about it, stating that when the plant needs water, it shrivels up quite dramatically, so it earned the nickname “DRAMA QUEEN” LOLOLOL. I like to name my plants, so she will now be known as Joan Crawford. The monstera he chose is now Frank, short for Frankenstein, and the pathos is now Archer.

When we got home, we opened the blinds, and placed the plants where we wanted them, and I swear, they all perked up almost immediately. That makes me happy. He fully believes in talking to plants, and I am planning on playing music for them. If I can’t have a pet here in this apartment, I will have plants.
