The rainy season is upon us. As I have too much to do this weekend and I wanted to get my cardio in this morning, and as my Garmin fitness tracker told me that a 45-minute brisk walk was recommended I had a couple of options. I could go to the gym and walk on the treadmill, or I could walk down to the end of the block, cross the street and walk on the track.
I geared up and went for the track at first light, which is about a half hour before sunrise. It was pouring. And the rain intensified the closer I got to the track. I was amazed to find there in the rain and the dark, because whatever the weather app said, it was still dark, there were a bunch of men out in the middle of the field playing soccer. We are talking heavy rain. They replaced the field a number of years ago now with artificial turf, which is the only thing that made this possible.
My brain is kind of on overload lately. I have needed to make some unhappy decisions about one of my classes and all the things that go along with that, losing students, losing revenue, but having a saner schedule and a happier back and all that comes with scaling down just slightly. It is breaking my heart as this is my flagship class. The one I started with all those years ago. And I am going to shift the time of my in-person class an hour earlier.
So, a 45-minute brisk walk in the rain, (it did let up a bit halfway through) was just the ticket. No headphones or distractions, Just me, in my lane, round and round. Very meditative.
When one works for a company or an established organization, there are procedures and tools available to implement those procedures. We do not have that with the League, and I spend an annoying amount of time taking things the way people send them to me and doing things to them to make them fit into what structure is there. I can’t just do the work; I have to figure out how to do the work with what has been provided. I am looking at you Adobe. We all have different versions and some of us don’t have the program at all. Bleh.
We did get a $50,000 stock donation this week. We are a small organization, and this is most welcome. We have one not quite full-time employee, and they are about at their wit’s end with demands from all the portfolio managers. I spent over an hour on Monday listening to them vent in a relatively good-natured way about it all. Some of this money in the long run will most likely go to taking some of that load off them.
I did get my hair cut on Wednesday. It is now a more reasonable length for a mature woman. It was almost to my waist. She took about six inches off. My hair person was suggesting I braid it to the side but no, not my style. I am lucky to have hair that looks okay long, even if it is a bit of a frizz festival at times.
My weight loss has stalled about 12 lbs. above my goal. I am not too upset about this, but it is a thing. I continue to focus on getting enough protein and fiber each day. People in my life tell me I look svelte. I need to rely on them because I have no realistic image of what I look like.
Healthy, for my age, I hope.
Form fitting tights help.
We had a new person show up at our Dialogue group this last week. Actually two. Both women. (Yay!) One I vaguely know, a journalist, essayist, writing teacher that I was at a writing workshop with many years ago. She is warm, and lovely, and with it in her mid 80’s. The other woman, we heard a lot from, a painter in her 60’s I suspect, originally Korean but she has lived all over the world, most recently Berlin and Vienna, she loves Vienna. She has an unusual facial deformity which she explained to us. Very thought provoking.
The Chocolatier came back, he brought exquisite chocolates this time, and I think in time if he does come regularly, he will integrate into the group. He makes this hand gesture, that is kind of like a king who is indicating that a subject may speak. It is fascinating, and just slightly irritating. But that might be because he reminds me of my brother.
Carlo, the cat has two favorite toys. He is remarkably playful for a 12-year-old cat. One is a Cat Dancer, which is a wire with bits of rolled up cardboard on it. The other is a collection of brightly colored beer pong balls that we basically play floor pool with. His favorite are the fluorescent pink ones. He often baps them off somewhere when I am otherwise engaged and so I spend a fair amount of time looking for them. Under things, in corners. But a number had gone missing lately and I was flummoxed by where they could be.
(He enjoys it when I get down on the floor with a flashlight.) Today I was vacuuming and I moved his domed scratching hut and lo and behold! Two pink ones, a yellow one and a white one came rolling out. One place I never thought to look.
It is amazing what turns up when one is doing chores as a method of procrastination on something else. And now we can get all happy and play with his absolutely favorite toys.
At least until he gets bored.
