Our ship spent the morning scenic cruising to view the Hubbard Glacier. We woke up to dense fog outside our balcony as we sailed into Yakutat bay, so we weren’t optimistic. We woke up at 6:30am, and since our cabin is right outside the launderette, we could hear the crew member unlock it, and be the first to throw our laundry in. Since today was technically a “sea day”, lots of people got the idea to do laundry. On my way back from throwing the laundry in, someone else was approaching the launderette.

During laundry, I ate breakfast and La Prof got ready, and after that we went out to the top deck so we could see the sail-in. By then the fog had cleared and you could see the glacier from way out in Yakutat Bay. It was a big contrast from my last Alaskan cruise from 20 years ago, when it was overcast and chilly. LPCR’s daughter joined us. When the ship sailed into Disenchantment Bay, the bow was opened up for passengers, so the three of us went to the bow for sight seeing. Compared to the Antarctic glaciers, Hubbard is a lot wider, but I think not as tall. I can’t tell because the ship can’t sail too close since it’s not ice-rated. Still, the sun was out - we were hot - and the mountains around Disenchantment bay made for beautiful scenery. We were sailing close to carved glacial ice. I could hear the crackling sound they make when their air bubbles pop.

LPCR joined us there, and we went to the buffet to meet up with her husband. At that point the ship was pulling back to Point Latouche so they could load passengers who paid to take a smaller boat to see the glacier close-up. So we, being also at the back of the ship, got a lovely view of the glacier while sipping coffee. There we decided we would use the hot tub since it was a warm day. It was supposedly 55 degrees but felt like 70. We went to the hot tub, and by the time we were done and finished cleaning up, the ship was already leaving the glacier a second time. Just in time for lunch.

During lunch La Prof and I got an alert that our router at home was offline. La Professeure checked and saw an alert for our area for power outage (it was due to a car accident that destroyed a powerline, but it was restored a few hours later). However, our router didn’t reboot back. So, that’s unfortunate as we don’t have access to our home automation remotely anymore. I think somebody has to perform a manual reset. I guess it’s one thing to look forward to when we get back.

For the afternoon it was quite leisurely. We went to a talk about whales and bears first (I could barely stay awake for that), while La Prof went to a bracelet making workshop. I did a second load of laundry (again, getting lucky with the slots). We then went to the coffee shop to read
while laundry was going, and when it was done, we went to afternoon tea. After that we played board games in the designated game room. She had a whole glass of wine but still beat me at scrabble. And that was with me having both blank squares. Then it was time for dinner.

We were beat after dinner - how could doing nothing be so tiring? - so we turned down immediately.
