Health Scare

After coming back from Binghamton, the rabbit had a vaccine booster shot. After that he started eating cardboard and wicker we had put in his area for enrichment. And he started liking eating wooden sticks, too. Meanwhile he started rejecting his treats, and usual food pallet.

We were worried about GI stasis (essentially, bunny constipation), which can kill a rabbit in hours. So we reduced the size of his habitat, and removed all cardboards and wicker from it. La Professure got stasis meds from the vet because our stash is already expired.

La Professure had no luck administering medicine to him, but we figured out we can wrap him in a blanket first like a straightjacket (a technique known as Bunny Burrito). That worked, and now he seems to be doing better. But he is not happy about it. Now every time I go downstairs, he’d assume I was going to pick him up for medicine, and tries to hide away (though, I made sure the only place he could hide is a cat-carrier, which I would then use to pick him up and move him upstairs for medicine).

He seems to be doing better the last few days now, La Professeure has been monitoring his fecal output and says it’s returning to normal. He started eating his pellets again and taking treats. We stopped giving him meds but are still restricting his access to cardboard and wicker for at least another week.

That said… I think an actual rabbit meat burrito would be tasty.

Preach to a different choir

ENT doctor organised a fundraiser for the amateur musician group yesterday. He said he would invite people with deep pockets to it, but when I got there, I realized it’s just the regular crowd - I already knew everyone there, except two. So I had a nice time catching up with people, but it was more a party than a fundraiser.

It raised 46% of the goal, half of which goes toward orgainsing the fundraiser itself. I guess the guests don’t have as deep pockets as the ENT doctor thought.

I do wonder if it’s because we shared the goal of the fundraiser was to raise enough funds to underwrite a complete orchestral concert. People who are there (including me) are not particularly involved with the orchestra, so I wonder if that turned people off. And the thing feels like preaching to the choir: if someone is there it means they already know about the organisation and would already have donated if they wanted to.

I think we need different people in the crowd, maybe someone with an interest in seeing the orchestra expand.

Meaningful Performances

Last month’s recital made a sizeable profit, even though the hall wasn’t particularly packed. There was a large number of groups performing though - 14 in total - so perhaps each group brought only a small contingent with them, so each person in the contingent felt more pressure to donate? I’m not sure why, but I’ll take it.

Next recital is in two weeks and has 12 groups in it, assuming no-one pulls out at the last minute, so I’m hopeful we won’t lose money in the event. I’m playing some Alma Deutscher and got some friends interested in during the fundraiser, so hopefully it’ll be well-attended as well.

Little Boo-boo is going to university in Scotland in the autumn, and played in his last student violin recital at school on Thursday. He had been reluctant to do it - I think he doesn’t enjoy performing - and tried to use the excuse of not getting along with the school’s accompanist as an excuse. Unfortunately for him, his parents and violin teacher called his bluff, and got me to accompany him. I was there when he played in his first student recital (he was six, I think) so it’s nice I get to pay with him for his last one there.

He says he’s taking his violin with him to Scotland, so presumably he’ll still do musical activities there.
