GS’s s SURVEY ON UNDERSTANDING
1: There is a common expression - ‘strength of the human spirit’. How do you understand what is meant by the human spirit?
I’m not into spiritual things - I’m not even sure I have a spirit (or a soul). I only know what I am in the here and now.... and I have such little understanding.
2: What do you think has been the cause of conflicts & wars throughout history ..is it Politics? Religion? Human greed? Power? Racism? Ignorance? or something else?
All the causes listed have made people suffer and have given people excuses for hurting others. I do not see a solution.
3: How do you see the purpose of human life?
My little Catholic catechism - that I have forsaken all my life said God made us to know and serve him. Or maybe it didn’t. It was a long time ago. If I ever see God, or maybe even an emissary, I might ask that question.
4: Do you believe people can change?
Well, we get older. And sicker. And dumber. I don’t see a lot of positive change - perhaps Alcoholics Anonymous helps some people.
5: Do you believe the world is coming to an end and why?
I don’t know. I can see it going on into the future. People have always expected the world to end and they were always wrong. At some point they may be right. I do not know. Newton’s Law - a body put into motion remains in motion… There’s more to it, but I’m not in the mood to look it up.
6: Do you believe this is all there is or do you believe in an afterlife?
I truly, distinctly and strongly believe this is all there is. I have a few fantasies of what I’d like an afterlife to be involving conversations with people I knew in life or people I wish I had known in life, but I doubt very much they will happen.
7: Do you think for yourself based on facts you have investigated, or get all information via media, a political/religious dogma or an individual?
I don’t think a lot. I don’t value my own opinion much. I can be mean to others and their opinions sometimes. I am SO TIRED of those who reject science.
8: Do you believe partisan politics will save the world, stop wars and unite humanity?
They haven’t yet. I think they are needed though - how can we live with one another without an organized government?
9: Do you believe in a Higher Power?
I believe in a creator - all this had to come from somewhere, but I don’t believe anyone cares about us. I think trying to please a God is futile. Sorry ‘bout that.
10: Do you see a conflict between science (evolution) and religion, or can they actually compliment each other?
I was told in my god-forsaken Cathlic educated youth that science is the study of God, that as we learn more we become closer to knowing God. I believe that as much as I believe in anything. If I believed in anything.
11: How would you define values and/or virtues?
I believe in the Golden Rule - do onto others as you would have them do onto you. I think that is the only value or virtue.
12: How do you see a likely future for future generations?
I think at any point in history that question is unanswerable. The ‘to hell in a hand basket’ way of thinking is attached closely to human nature. We do not know. Predictions are not valid.
I hope we get some rain in the next week or so.
