EVERY SINGLE DAY

Your nest gets knocked down
by the landlord’s children
with one hasty swipe
of their straw bear claw
Leaving the remnants of a party
on the porch floor
streamers of trash and hay
polka-dotted with shit
and pinfeather confetti

But, every single day
when the spring sun comes up,
candy coating the rooftops,
you’ve rebuilt your home
in the same corner of the porch
You stupid, fucking bird
You beautiful, hopeful fool
placing your slim dreams for survival
in the cupped hands
of the Old Testament God,

so that they may be baptized
in a lake of fire, ignited
by your naturally defiant instinct
to simply stay alive
no matter what

We should all be so lucky
–we should all be so glad.
