Guys, I tried out my first class of Bikram Hot Yoga last night! Okay so let me break it down before I get in to it all.

I got this great groupon ($25 for 10 classes) for a studio about 3min from my apartment. I was super excited but also really nervous. I hate steam rooms and feeling suffocated or trapped and I was worried that was how the yoga was going to play out. Luckily it did not. But I was reluctant on buying the groupon so I waited a while. Alas, I bought it anyway and decided that even if I did two classes that it would pay for itself!

So I decided to gather the strength and muster of going to yoga last night. A 90min class in a room that is 105 degrees. I went in with two objectives, to stay in the room for the entire time, and to not vomit all over the place. I have done yoga before, but my core is rather weak and so are my yoga muscles, so I wasn’t going to kid anyone that doing the normal poses I was used to doing was going to be easy in a room that hot. Taking it easy was key. I drank a ton of water throughout the day and I ate a small meal about an hour and a half before class. I was in the clear!

The teacher, Adam, reminded me of a ‘bro’ from New Jersey and I found that rather amusing. He wasn’t very zen and I was more comfortable with that. Luckily I got to the class early so I placed my mat near the door, just in case, and mimicked a lot of the other yoga-ers in the studio all the while reminding myself to breathe, stay centered, and listen to my body.

Sadly I was only able to really do the yoga sequence for the first half of the class before the terrifing sensation of wanting to throw up came over me so I immediatly took to the floor, sat down, and did floor stretches till the sensation moved past me. It was hard to keep going, but every now and then I got back up and did some more poses till the class finally ended.

I was dripping wet, sweaty, blinded by my own salt. It was disgusting, awesome, slippery, hot, and wet and I smelled like a ham sandwich. It was gross. My clothes were damp and my hair stuck to my face like I had just gotten out of a swimming pool.

Did I feel awesome after? Not really, more exhausted than anything.
Would I do it again? Of course! Going to go back on Wed! Maybe this time I’ll do more than 45 min of yoga. But not counting on it.

perhaps I am one of those hot yoga lovers.
only time can tell…
