It’s nearly 9pm and I’m just home from a long workday and I feel accomplished. I think it might have had a lot to do with not being at home AT ALL today.
First of all, Head Cat (the big boss) was in town today, mainly because he’s on a small speaking junket and will be traveling through for a couple of conferences, but we set it up so he and I could meet for a few hours this morning…and then get together this evening for another thing that I’ll tell you about in a sec.
So this morning, I met him at the same hotel where I met him last time (remember, the beautiful boutique hotel, but the trashed-out room where we ended up working?), but he asked me if I’d meet him in the cafe when I got there.
Perfect!
We met in the cafe/coffee shop and he bought me a coffee. Great! And we sat down for a minute while I told him what I’d planned for us to work on, and I told him I’d set up a video chat with an engineer I wanted him to meet. Excellent.
But when it was time for us to go set up for the video meeting, it was too loud everywhere, so guess where we had to take the meeting? Yep. In the hotel room.
This time, however, he’d gotten the penthouse suite on the corner and it was a lovely, lovely room. Still disheveled, mind you, but thankfully no crumbs all over the floor or anything.
We started the Zoom - he and I were both using my laptop, so both in the same picture and after about three minutes into the call, I noticed that the way we had the laptop set up and the angle at which we were sitting (at a little bistro-sized table), that the partially-made bed was in the background!! Ughhh! How unprofessional and WEIRD I’m sure it looked to the guy!
I mean, I know he understands this industry, and he actually is a pretty big fan of Head Cat, but I don’t know if even he could have overlooked that or not thought anything of it.
It’s so WEIRD, right?!
But other than that, the call was great and he was really happy about the outcome, so that was good. Afterward, we had some other things to review (I’d brought my big bags of tricks with me, ha!) and he was pretty happy with a couple of things that we were able to go over, and then he had to leave because he needed to go meet with this other woman he sometimes works with on these speaking engagements and whatnot.
Great. We went our separate ways and I ended up working at one coffee shop nearby downtown, working while it rained, and then took a nice, very late lunchtime walk after the rain stopped, and then back to a different coffee shop, sitting outside for the rest of the afternoon, working away at my laptop and smiling at the passersby and having a quick hello here and there. Gah. So nice to be among people!
At one point, this super cute, young guy approached me and told me that I was very attractive! Ha! He then asked me if I was married. I normally answer “yes” to those questions because I’m usually feeling very meh and whatever dude about guys who approach. But this time I thought about it for a split second and just said, “No. I’m not.” Wondering what he’d say after that.
He then told me that I have the look of someone who is married.
Mmmmkay? I wish I’d asked him what that meant.
We chatted some more, and he told me that he was a firefighter and I told him that I was impressed and it was such a noble profession.
And then he just said, “Okay, well, I gotta go in and get some coffee, so…”
And that was THAT! I was like, okay, nice chatting with you! Do you think that maybe he has a fetish about married women?
Anyway, after all that and around the end of the business day, I sent a text to my friend/girl crush Lee because…long story…I can’t remember if I told it here? But she and her wife moved out of our apartment complex where I’d met them, and moved to an area about 35-40ish minutes away and just happened to move next door to the woman who does the work with Head Cat AND they had talked about the work that they both do…and suddenly figured out that I was the common denominator among Lee/Wife, the neighbor woman, and Head Cat!!
I know all of that was probably impossible to follow, but the bottom line is, I was invited over to the woman’s house for dinner with my old nabes AND my big boss!
Turns out Lee, my girl crush is now doing some consulting work for Head Cat! What a small freaking WORLD this is!
So the dinner tonight was not only FULL of loud, rowdy conversation, chaos, laughter and stories of crazy coincidence BUT also, there were eight dogs all vying for attention. It was WILD.
And then more people showed up and there were even more coincidences (coincidi??) that I could spend all night talking about, but I won’t. Just know that it was bizarre and mind-boggling to think about how we’re all connected.
All too soon I had to leave because I had to pick up Martini at doggy daycare.
But I’ve actually been invited back for Lee + Wife’s Housewarming Party on Friday, so hopefully there will be more interesting run-ins to share then.
Time for bed. Another workday awaits very soon. I hope tomorrow is as interesting as today has been!
