I had lunch with Susan today. It's funny that I really only see my dad a few times a year, but Susan and I get together every two weeks or so. I'd made the decision a while back to start referring to her as "mom" instead of Susan, but using her name had become a habit that was hard to break. When she picked me up this morning and I got in her car I said, "Hi mom." It just came out naturally the first time and I immediately felt a little embarrassed because I wasn't sure how she would feel about me calling her that. She responded with, "Hi Cindy" and I thought that would be the end of that.

But after a few seconds of silence while we drove to the restaurant, she asked, "Do you really think of me as a mom?" Without hesitation, I answered her honestly that I do, and she said that makes her very happy. She acknowledged that she doesn't have any biological children and at her age she knows that isn't going to change, but she thinks of me and my sisters as her daughters. She said she loves the three of us like we were her own. She was driving so I couldn't exactly hug her, but I put my hand on her shoulder and said, "I love you too, mom." And I meant it.

Over lunch I asked her how she felt about the nude wedding, and she said she was a little uncomfortable with the idea, but she wouldn't miss my wedding no matter what. We talked for a bit about nudism and why I like it, and I really appreciated that she seemed to really listen to me and be interested in my opinion.

When she took me home, she came inside to see the kids. Rachel walked in from her lifeguarding job, greeting Susan with a kiss on the cheek, and said, "Hi mom." I thought it was a funny coincidence that she got the same greeting from both of us today.
