Day 8 (9th July): Regensburg in Honeymoon

We spent today at Regensburg. It is a bigger town, but the 'cool' part - the old town - is still in walkable distance from the dock, so that was the part we spent our time. However, this was a day when the temperature fell into the 60s, and I had left my jacket at home (by accident). So after the walking tour - another set of small cobble stone streets, and another old church - we came back to the boat to get lunch, and headed out in search of a warm coat.

Every small town has a reason for us to visit - Melk has the Abbey, Passau is in the confluence of three rivers, and Regenburg has the oldest stone bridge. The bridge is actually a UNESCO world heritage site, so we went to the museum to check it out. It was informative, but I was surprised at how sparsely appointed the museum was.

The town has a good-luck charm in the form of a small mouse sculpture, which La professeure was very interested in, so we went looking for rat/mouse souvenir too. We ended up finding the mouse souvenirs, and proceeded to a department store, and shopped. I suppose this would count as a shopping trip on a hoiday? We ended up going to a "TK Maxx" (thank you Google Maps) and got La Professeure's socks, but I didn't find a coat. We ended up going back to the stone bridge museum to get a sweat shirt that says "kultureelbe" on it. So now I have a UNESCO shirt.

After we came back to the ship, the activities of the previous days caught up with us. I had stayed up late last night to watch the world cup game (if you can call it that) between Brazil and Germany and only had 7 hours of sleep. So I napped for a bit. There was also a lecturer who came on board to give a talk about the Main-Danube canal (which we are sailing on right now), and that's very informative.

I never did expect a rivercruise to be so exhausting. Every day we are active - walking around town, climbing stairs or slopes, or going to one concert or another. I had expected this to be a relaxing and boring trip, but it is turning out to be much richer than I expected. I am enjoying it a lot.
