NJM #6 - So I Decided... in These Foolish Things

Today I went and got myself a job. I may kick myself over this, but I’m going to work a seasonal retail job at a clothing store over the holidays.

I will start next Sunday and probably work about 30 hours per week. It won’t make a dent in my expenses, but I would like for it to cover my Christmas gifts.

Plus it will make me feel like I’m actually contributing to something during my days until that big job comes around.

I was completely upfront with the store manager about the fact that I’m working on getting a “real” job that has to do with my actual career and that if that suddenly comes to fruition then I’m going to have to pivot quickly. She was fine with that and thanked me for being completely transparent.

She then asked when I could start and I said, “Tomorrow.”

But I won’t start until next Sunday because she needs a group to train rather than one-on-one, so I have yet another free week ahead of me.

I really like the merchandise that this store carries and can’t wait to shop along with the customers!

And yes, in case you’re wondering, I do have retail store experience under my belt. It’s been a while, but I was a retail store manager after I graduated from college and I’ve worked seasonal retail jobs both in my actual career (where we had to go out into the stores and work during the holidays) as well as a supplement to my full time job (mainly to get the store’s discount).

Also, it was the easiest interview I’ve ever had in my life. I know it’s apples to oranges as far as this job versus the jobs I’m aiming for, but it was just so nice to have someone act beyond pleased to have me there and mean it. I know how hard it is to get decent retail help, so our 15 minute chat was pretty phenomenal.

And yes, I do dislike the general public sometimes, but I love the holidays and I know I’ll do a good job at this!
