  1. She was Irish.
  2. She was Catholic.
  3. She was smart.
  4. She prized neatness.
  5. She wanted big things from/for me.
  6. Her hair got gray early.
  7. She had been a country school teacher.
  8. She liked her garden and her chickens.
  9. She had never learned to drive a car.
  10. She never went to the doctor.
  11. She never went to the dentist.
  12. She went to confession.
  13. She didn’t go to the library.
  14. Once for a short time she belonged to a cut-rate version of a book of the month club. I wish I still had her books.
  15. She started a study club for neighbor Catholic farm wives and named it after Kateri Tekaakwitha. Here’s a prayer to her - Kateri, not my mother. https://www.dosp.org/our-faith/prayers/prayer-to-st-kateri-tekakwitha-2/
  16. She had beautiful and distinctive handwriting. She knew how to spell. I could do neither.
  17. She made me take piano lessons.
  18. I am pretty certain my mother is helping me and my family avoid car accidents.
  19. She didn’t like cats and would not allow any kind of animal in the house.
  20. She was close to her parents and siblings.

I’m pretty sure I’ve done this before. But if I can’t remember you probably can’t either.

She had beautiful and distinctive handwriting.

It looks like Palmer Method script.

I learned this script (my mother insisted), but you'd never know it the way I write today...

It looks like the cards we had above the blackboards at country school.

My mother never learned to drive either. Thoughtful list.

I need to do this list :)
Today marks the 20th anniversary of my Mom's death. I think I'll go home early from work.
Take care,

I think it would be nice to post pictures of our parents. I'd like to find their wedding picture. I think it's somewhere in the wilderness of upstairs.

My parents didn't have wedding pics that turned out. My aunt may have one that wasn't great. I'll find older ones of my parents though :)

It's a very fair and balanced list.

Did you like taking piano lessons?

Not very much. I felt indulged - it was a luxury and there weren't a lot of luxuries in my life, but I KNEW I was not good at it and I KNEW I wasn't working hard enough at it. I wasn't used to failure or even mediocrity. Also it irritated my dad because we had to be in town at a certain time every week and it cost money. Funny, during my talks with my brother he said he felt burdened with my piano lessons because he would have to hang around town when he was only 6 or so. I thought my god, why?? I suppose it gave me a little culture and pleased my mother a little, but boy there should have been some other way to do that. Again. It was a different time.
