… do me a favor, please.

Tell me why you don’t like Updike. Emphasis on why/what you don’t like.

Thanks greatly.

I've only read Rabbit, Run. I found it tedious.

Ah, I'm sorry. You didn't fall in love.
Do you fall in love with authors? With what they write?

ConnieK woman in the moon ⋅ August 29, 2022

Not with authors, but when I read a truly exceptional line, I can get positively green with jealousy. :) For instance, when I read Jimmy Buffett's novel, I thought it was mediocre and in places, surprisingly boring. But he wrote one line that remains with me: "The Gulf waters were still and the sun set on it's horizon like a pat of butter, melting and spreading out on a flat pancake."

I love the way words go together too. A simile you can taste.

When I read Updike I see a person who thinks he is superior to people as a whole and also someone who does not like people as a whole. As a reader I can't see any reason to read what he writes. I haven't read anything by him for 35 years. He doesn't need me, he has lots of fans. I do not fall in love with authors...I don't know them as people.

Ah, everything you said about him is true of me. Except I never wrote anything. Did you get those impressions from the Rabbit books? Actually I've written a lot, just nothing of consequence. Some of that stuff comes from the New Yorker too. Superiority. A club, that while it doesn't shut you out, still has dues to pay.
Springsteen - debts no honest man can pay.
I had a good time, enjoyed, appreciated, etc. the Dem gathering yesterday. I should write about it. Life is just so... so whatever it is life is.
Have a good day, my friend.

I am ashamed to admit I have never felt compelled to read him.

Wait ; I did read “ The Witches of Eastwick” and liked it :-)

Same reply as the one I left Gypsy.
