Next week’s writing topic is best/worst advice you’re gotten from a parent or other adult.

After some thought, all I’ve got is:

  1. My dad telling me to leave the car in second gear till I got to the highway. (Semi-good advice. ‘60 Chevy had 6 cylinders, three forward gears (second was the middle one), and we lived at the bottom of several hills.

  2. Woman at work, old old old job, telling me ‘Right to tight, left to loose.’ I actually remember and use that a lot

So go for it.

I can think of several examples of good advice from my parents, but the one that stand out from my dad is "Pay yourself first." Meaning, put a percentage of your pay into savings before you spend. The worst advice --- wow, I can't think of any. I made a lot of bad choices and decisions but I don't recall any of them being the result of bad advice. But one comment comes to mind, it wasn't actually advice but a back handed compliment, when I was 20 and had long silky hair... "Don't ever cut your hair. Without your hair, you'd be nothing" (looks wise). What pisses me off is that at the time (I was sitting at a bar with a bunch of co-workers) I smiled at the guy and agreed with him!!

From my dad…
Every woman should have her own money
If money can solve a problem, it’s not a problem

Those are good ones!

A coworker has often said, "Loosey goosey, tighty whitey," to me in screwdriver situations, and I've never found that helpful, and your interpretation is better.

Pay attention. My father hammered that into me. It does help.

My Grandmother was full of little sayings that have stuck with me like “ Pretty is , as pretty does.” , “ Children should be seen and not heard.” , “ If something is worth doing, do it well.” , “ Always finish what you start.” , “ Treat others as you want to be treated.” , “ Once a cheat, always a cheat.” The list goes on and on. I hear her voice reminding me often :-)
Like Anaiss I don’t remember getting any bad advice. I made all my bad decisions and mistakes on my own. Some people have to learn the hard way and it appears I am one of them. :-)

Righty tighty, lefty loosey!

Best advice from my father: Always sign and date your creative work. Never stop learning.

Worst advice from my sister to her future daughter-in-law: Never gain more than 5 pounds after the wedding. She actually wrote it down as advice at her bridal shower. (My advice: Remember you're on the same team.)

Oh my. Wedding advice is a topic on its own. Woman greatly admired wrote in wedding guest books - be good to each other.

Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
Dad: Keep your foot off the clutch.
Mom: If you hit the bumps fast you get air time and it isn't so hard on the car. (real advice...she did laugh when she said it. No wonder she was always buying new vehicles!)

You gotta hard your foot on the clutch part of the time.

He must have caught me riding it...lol

Hmmm. When I was a young teacher my dad advised me that the older boys I taught were going to speculate about my love life and there was nothing I could do about. It would happen...don't let it get to me. That was good advice.

My dad often got into entrepreneurial ventures that involved a sales component. He tried to get us to buy into an expensive fire alarm system for our house when we were barely making ends meet. We didn't go for it.

My Dad: Always buy rather than rent and don't let your house payment exceed on week's pay.
My Husband: Don't worry about what the semi-tractor trailers are doing, give them lots of room and trust their professionalism.

Those are good pieces of advice. I put together my piece for the writers group but I need to add those things.

Beret August 16, 2022

I say "righty tighty, lefty loosey"

Serin August 21, 2022

I don't know if I have a specific piece of advice or if it's just my memory failing me. This is going to sit with me for a while.
