I’ve ran in circles my entire life chasing the next thing. I always thought to myself that if I’d just have a lover that is like ‘this’ or a salary like ‘that’, friendships like they have on t.v., parenting techniques, fitness routines, trendy diet– I’d be happy.

I sped out of a lot of relationships because they weren’t checking all the boxes. I found that I wasn’t AS happy as I thought I would be. I almost did the same thing with the relationship that I’m in. I’m happy I didn’t. I’ve come to realize the thing I value most is time spent and experiences. We obviously need money for this convenience, so– everything in balance. I had a higher paying job that took me away from my family and I lost a lot of friendships because of it. I was able to have a nice house and car, but I didn’t have time for any other box in my life’s laundry list of priorities. It’s frustrating, because there is a fine line. If you don’t make enough actual money, you’re working three jobs to pay rent and provide for your family… then there is a middle ground where there is balance– work and play respect each other– and then there is a space where you’re making enough money to enjoy everything you have always wanted, but you don’t have the time. I think that we are capable of having it all.. we just have to focus on all of the things that are important and prioritize each enough.

I had a supervisor of mine once tell me.. “Look at the major life priorities as floating balls in front of you. Let’s name them “Family”. “work”, “spirituality” and “friendships”. Life is a game of balance, you can’t pour more of yourself into one without the others dropping. If you only focus on work, you will eventually lose a grip on the other three balls. Same with pouring yourself into a relationship… it’s all about measuring your time and focus evenly”.

I thought this was pretty profound. I’m not as good at the balance as I’d like to be, but I think about it often.
