Mrs. Sherlock wanted me to see this unusual blooming agave across town on Saturday. At first, we weren’t going to walk as her social calendar is filling up with potlucks, but she had been amazed by seeing this the day before walking with her attorney, and it turns out that day’s social gathering was later than she had originally thought. We did a quick schedule change and headed out.

Because I am talking a lot about gardens lately, she took me through the large and very well run (not many weeds in the beds) community garden in that neck of these urban woods. We were allowed to bring Frieda in on her leash. We also walked through the cramped but productive community orchard. There were kids up in the trees picking fruit for fun. We discussed in a lively fashion the characteristics between cardoons and artichokes as both are going to seed here.

It all worked out well, because Diego, who has his front legs stretched across my left hand as I type this, had a rough digestive day yesterday and Kes came up to visit for a few hours and I was able to stay home with him. He is much better. It is the nature of a chronic illness, good days, bad days, many in between days.

When we were walking, we came across this huge old tree, beautiful and we used the iNaturalist app (that Four reminded me) I have on my phone to identify it as a Silver Maple. Across the street were two tall proud Tulip trees. The homeowner said they were at least as old as his house, which was built in 1925. He said they were messy, but they loved them. He also was quite knowledgeable about standard poodles, which made Frieda happy (because we were appreciating her).

She was thirsty and we stopped at a Starbucks in my old neighborhood to get her some water and a couple of cool drinks for us. The amount of maskless people out (particularly young people) in that little shopping area was astonishing. You would never know we still have pandemic going on.

Mrs. Sherlock found out that one of her tenants, a developmentally delayed young man, who had his 30th birthday on Friday, who she drove all around to get a replacement phone and cooked both a roast for and made a cake for, had, um, neglected to get his vaccine. Not even his first shot!

Mr. Sherlock was so mad when he found out he said…”He’s not getting that roast!”

She did talk to his grandparents, and he got the cake, but she was disappointed and angry to find out that he had not managed with the supports he has in place to get his shot. I kind of understand it though based on looking around. People here are acting as if there never was a pandemic.

What we do have that no one is denying is a horrible huge ungainly wildfire that is threatening power delivery to California where they are experiencing record breaking heat.

There are days where one wonders how much of all this we are going to take before we change our ways.

I acknowledge that for those in Britain who suffered a heart-breaking defeat at the Euro yesterday that the Branson run into weightlessness before the Bezos run next week must feel a bit of a place to put one’s pride but there are people starving in Syria, Ethiopia and dying of Covid all over the world. And three men with way too much money are competing for firsts in space tourism and industry?

This morning I am stiff and feeling a bit unmotivated so am looking forward to the Open Practice I am hosting on Zoom every weekday morning to get me moving and ready for whatever the heck comes next.

Almost no one wears masks here anymore. I barely see people with them on their wrists because they're not required for shopping, restaurants, gyms, and so on. About the only places they are required now are Uber and other ride shares, to be on public transit, and doctor's offices. But shopping, dining out, etc., it's all honor system, and the vaxxed are not required to wear them so they don't. I don't. If someone at high risk of dying is not vaxxed at this point, and they're out in public shopping, going to restaurants, etc., that's on them. Those who go to my office don't wear them in the office (not required in the office, though being vaxxed is required, and the building requires them in the lobby and elevators). Not even the CEO, who is a physician, or the other physicians in the office, and you know how conservative and cautious they've been with not mandating that everybody return until January.

This area may have a higher vax rate than other parts of the country, though, what with the federal government, all the military bases, and so on. Heck, we're already thinking of boosters when they're available!

We have one of those plants in my neighborhood that also bloomed this summer. So fun to watch the progression to full bloom. While I like to support science and exploration, I think we need to solve so many things here on our home planet, especially as there is no other planet it like it. I'd like to see caps on wealth and the rest going towards the well being of the earth and her inhabitants.

I’m so surprised at the lack of mask wearing going on just now in various parts of the country. People not getting vaccinated is incredibly disappointing but there will always be a percentage who do that but I would have thought the simple act of masking up would have still continued.
