Susan in The family

My dad had a string of girlfriends after the divorce. I remember seeing him with different women almost every time we got together for something. Now that I'm older, I realize that it was probably a big deal to him to be introducing his kids to whomever he was dating, but at the time it was just awkward to always having to meet someone new.

Then Susan came along. She immediately seemed like my dad's equal. He is wealthy and has been very successful in business, and she was the same. She had no children, and I worried at the time that meant she wasn't a child-friendly person and would want nothing to do with us.

The opposite was true, and she became an amazing mother-figure for me and my sisters. It's nice that she took us on expensive shopping trip and to nice spas. And I certainly won't complain about her season tickets at Fenway. But it was more that just that. She was someone I really felt like I could talk to about things going on in my life and who really listened and offered appropriate advice without nagging.

I have mostly positive feelings for all four of my parents, but Susan is my hands-down favorite.
