Mugged. in These Foolish Things

As a cherry on this WTF sundae, today I was mugged in broad daylight in a church courtyard. I live in an urban downtown area, right next to a very large church that takes up a whole city block.

I’d just gotten stamps to write letters to lonely old people (see [Charmingly Neurotic]’s entry), so I had my purse with me to put the stamps in so I could just go from there out to walk the dog. I was wearing my bag cross-body and looking at my phone mindlessly, sending texts while I let the dog do her thing in the flower beds. She loves the flower beds to do her business.

All of a sudden I heard footsteps running towards me and then I felt the sensation of being picked up from behind and slammed into the ground (thankfully, the ground of the dirt in the
flower bed and not the concrete). When I turned to look at who it was and what was happening, three things happened at once: (1) I saw a guy wearing a bandanna over his face and as I looked at him, he started wailing at my head and the side of my face with his clenched fist, (2) I heard him say, “Bitch, give me this!” as he began to pull at my purse, and (3) I finally realized that I was being mugged and I started screaming and the dog started barking like crazy!

As soon as I screamed, people came running. And I mean RUNNING!! A woman came and helped me up and the man she was with started running after the dude who attacked me. A man who had just been driving by stopped his van to come help out. Several other people started gathering around, but they could see that I was being helped so they went off in different directions.

The woman was so helpful and she picked me up off the dirt and helped me to a bench. She called 911. She made sure I was OK. She said she’d just seen me in the post office and then I remembered her and the man she was with.

The police came and wrote a report. The paramedics came and checked me out and asked me if I wanted to go to the ER. I was scared because the dude beat my head on the same side as my carotid dissection, but even though it was sore, I wasn’t bleeding, wasn’t having trouble seeing, was starting to swell a little, but the dude could have hit me sooooo much harder, I know. I am grateful that he was a pussy.

The police walked me back over to my building (it was just next door) and I got the woman’s contact information.

And now I’m a little nervous to walk the dog by myself so I have asked a guy to come over and walk with me on my dog walk.

Call me INSANE, but my next entry may just be a RAD.

Can life get even weirder?

I didn’t think so.

xox,
GS

Holy shit. Glad you’re okay!

OMG! I am so sorry this happened. It's so scary and chilling. Thank God people came to help you. Crime here (and it appears in all major cities) is on the rise. Please be careful. I hope they catch him.

Deleted user May 27, 2020

He didn't get your purse/wallet, right? Meaning he has no idea who you are or where you live, right?

Ginger Snap Deleted user ⋅ May 27, 2020

No, thankfully he got nothing. At first, I thought he got my phone, but it had fallen into the flower bed. My keys and wallet were in my purse, but he couldn't get them because I was wearing my purse cross-body. Weirdly, I truly think he was a super pussy because he didn't seem to pull on the bag super hard and he didn't seem to hit me as hard as I think people can hit. You know? Maybe it was a gang initiation and I was his first victim? He felt badly for beating on me so he didn't try as hard? He didn't seem like he was DEADLY desperate. He was also very young. The woman who helped give a description (he came from behind so he was hard to see/describe) said he was probably in his 20s.

Glad you’re okay!
I guess no walking and phoning.

The honor of strangers.

Qapla!

pandora May 27, 2020

Omg!! I can’t believe this happened to you! I’m so glad you’re okay and that the passers-by were so helpful.

Deleted user May 27, 2020

So sorry, glad you are okay.

Satine May 27, 2020

So horrible, I am so glad it wasn’t worse but feeling scared and upset for you. Thinking of you and sending so much love.

.allison. May 27, 2020

i'm glad you are physically okay, but how are you otherwise? that is so violating and upsetting!

IpsoFacto May 27, 2020

Wow! I can’t believe that happened in broad daylight right next to your apartment. I’m sure it happened in a flash of movement and that you had no idea what was going on at first. I am so glad that there were others around who came to your rescue so quickly to Blanche Devereaux, “I have relied on the kindness of strangers.”

Ginger Snap IpsoFacto ⋅ May 27, 2020

I’m so, so grateful to those strangers.

Florentine May 27, 2020

Holy shit, girl! 😮 I am so glad you weren't hurt and that there were people around willing to step into action ASAP. Thank goodness! And good for you for being able to go from confusion to understanding and noise-making so quickly. I would be scared to walk my dog after that without a buddy, too. I hope yours provides some good company!

Ginger Snap Florentine ⋅ May 27, 2020

I’m terrified. I am not sure how to work through this.

Sugar Magnolia May 27, 2020

Sometimes the places you walk look like you are so alone that it brings out the mother in me and I am scared for you. Who would have thought it would be in a busy area?? So glad you were not badly hurt and he doesn't have your personal info.

Ginger Snap Sugar Magnolia ⋅ May 27, 2020

I’m so glad too!

Fred May 27, 2020

Wow, that’s terrible. I was assaulted in my way to work (groped not hit) and I didn’t want to go by the location ever again. It really shakes your sense of security. I’m so sorry this happened and I hope you feel better soon.

Ginger Snap Fred ⋅ May 27, 2020

Thank you. I’m still very scared.

Fred Ginger Snap ⋅ May 28, 2020

I bet! Probably playing it over and over again too? I kept thinking I should have done something else to avoid it. But it’s not our fault when people do this.

plushcreep May 27, 2020

Holy crap, that's crazy. So glad he was a pussy and you're going to be fine!

Athena May 27, 2020

Yikes! I’m glad you’re ok!

Ginger Snap Athena ⋅ May 27, 2020

Not ok. Traumatized, but I’ll work thought it.

Athena Ginger Snap ⋅ May 28, 2020

I’m sorry 😢

bobbi01 May 27, 2020

Oh that's horrifying. I'm so glad you could scream (unlike those dreams when you open your mouth and nothing comes out).

Ginger Snap bobbi01 ⋅ May 27, 2020

It was a delayed reaction, but yeah. I’m glad I screamed!

kansasgirl May 27, 2020

Omg! I’m so sorry you had to go through that but I’m glad you’re ok.

Ginger Snap kansasgirl ⋅ May 27, 2020

Working through it.

Deleted user May 27, 2020

Wow, I am so glad you are ok. This kind of thing is happening more and more in my area too, I'm trying to convince my other half that city life is not for us. Not working yet :P

So glad you are ok once again!

Complicated Disaster May 28, 2020

❤️❤️❤️ xx

Nash May 28, 2020

Holy crap what a nutty time we live in. There is something in the water.

Marg May 28, 2020

OMG in broad daylight too - that’s mad! I’m so sorry this happened to you - it must have really shaken you up. Very glad you weren’t more physically hurt and that folk nearby reacted so quickly - also that you have someone who can help you walk the dog for a bit until you feel safe again.

At Last May 28, 2020

Omg how scary! I can’t imagine. Lucky there were people nearby and that you weren’t hurt!

Deleted user May 28, 2020

Oh nooo... what a nightmare! I'm so glad people ran towards you, not away from you. Wishing you all kinds of quick healing. 💛

Ginger Snap Deleted user ⋅ May 28, 2020

I'm so grateful for those people. Two more angels protecting me.

Soliloquy May 28, 2020

OMG, that's so scary! I'm glad you're OK and there were people around to help you.

Kate May 28, 2020

OMG! Sweetie! I hope you get checked out. At least a call with your doc friend. So glad it wasn't worse, but holy crap, that was bad enough!

Ginger Snap Kate ⋅ May 28, 2020

Texted my PCP friend who called me immediately to check on me. Face is sore today and have a raspberry, but thankfully, looks like no bruising. I'm going through a whirlwind of emotions, but after talking with a few people I'm feeling better. Appreciate all of the kind words here.

Horrible. You need a weapon of some sort living there :-(
