Today we made a port call to Uglich. The ship didn’t dock till 2pm, so in the morning we had lectures (about Romanov dynasty and Russian language lesson). The time passed by. Viking is good about keeping us occupied during long sailing days.

We were taken to a tour of the Kremlin of Uglich, visiting the Uglich Museum where we heard a short performance by the the Ark (Kovchek) choir. The musicians were very impressively trained. I wish the concert was longer.

Then we went to Khram Preobrazheniya Gospodnya, which is now a museum, and then the Church of Dimitri’s spilled blood, which is still in use. All the structures we went to were rather small, capable of seating maybe 100-200 people; and the structures were old too.
Then we got to a local host’s home to have a home visit. Apparently the town is now mostly tourist-supported, so there is a local agency that arranges for these home-hosted visits. During soviet time it was a factory town (watch factory) but after the economic reform, the factory went away and the town went downhill. Now it is re-inventing itself as a tourist attraction. Our host Ludmilla was very talkative, and we had a lovely time. Then we got an hour to shop at the “road of temptation”, and got several souvenirs. I was surprised just how inexpensive everything were.

We cast off at 6, and Viking filled the evening with activities, but we didn’t go to all of them.

I'm enjoying these travelogues as a glimpse into the places you visited, but also glimpses into a world where people...went places? Other than the grocery store?

Haha. I am nostalgic for a time when we could travel... anywhere. :(
