Crazy Fit Ladies in Everyday Ramblings

This might seem like a small thing but having the energy and the range of motion to wash and change my sheets is pretty exciting here in recovery land.

Saturday I got up stiff and sore as I have every day lately and I am telling myself, maybe I should stay home, rest, recuperate get a little better before I go off to the gym for the first time since the fall. It’s raining, I didn’t sleep well, concerned about the fate of Democracy…

And through all of this I am acknowledging that this is the way I feel, yes dear, uh huh, I get it. And then I grabbed my bag and went to the gym.

Mrs. Sherlock and Ms. Fit blew in a few moments before the class was due to start. I had set myself up in front of but a little to the side of the teacher. I encouraged Mrs. Sherlock to stand right beside me. She did not want to, she wanted to be in the back or at least behind Ms. Fit.

I pulled yoga teacher rank and said that I wanted the teacher to be able to see her clearly throughout the class to make sure she was safe. And she actually listened to me and stayed put.

She came out of the equipment room with 7.5 lbs. on each end of her bar.

While Ms. Fit was setting her own stuff up I pulled rank again and had Mrs. Sherlock take the 5 lb. weights off.

The teacher, an absolutely delightful and funny woman in her 30’s, strong but not thin, is 8 months pregnant. She is still carrying the baby really high. Mrs. Sherlock in nurse mode got along with her famously.

The class was fun. I was careful and did not overdo it. About half way through Mrs. Sherlock looked over at me laughing and shaking her head and I said, “ Aren’t you glad we took that extra weight off?” She was like, ohhhhh yeah. She was working.

For an overweight 71 year old woman with two artificial knees she was amazing. A true testament to all the movement she does do.

After the class she was a bit worried about me because she knows how bad the fall was but I was fine. Her muscles were a bit reactive, little spasms and we had to go back and look for her dropped rain hat, which we found by the weight machines.

She told me yesterday when we met at church that she was cinching up by the time she got in the car and took some Tylenol when she got home. She was moving fine yesterday but said her quads were quite sore.

Ms. Fit told her she wanted to work on her “form”.

We are going to do it again next week. Crazy ladies. The class has quite a mix of people. The fact that you choose the weight you work with has a lot to do with that.

Okay, I admit it was a slow low energy walk home.

I spent the rest of the afternoon finishing the best book I have read in at least a couple of years… I highly recommend it… Late Migrations by Margaret Renkl. Besides the essays being deeply affecting, it is a beautiful book. She is a poet and many of the pieces have plates in front created by her artist brother. I got the hardcover from the library.

And here is another completely unrelated recommendation; a poem by the poet Carl Philips called Wake Up.

I have been thinking about it since I heard it read in my headphones yesterday walking home from church.

Can I just ask as an aside, what was the deal with the completely sexualized half time show for the Super Bowl? Yes they are amazing, fit and talented woman but What the Heck???

My husband and I talked about just that, all the bump and grind moves, not exactly PG. And while it was a woman centered show, it was highly sexualized.

I noted that after in a repeat of a snatch of the event and wondered about the family nature of this event, adding one more thing to the list of things that I don't understand about sports events as family fare.

You’re the third diary entry to mention that half-time show at the SuperBowl - I kinda wish I’d seen it now!
Sounds like crazy ladies having fun to me - which is what it’s all about - or should be! :)

At least here in the U.S. it is available on you tube as a stand alone. That is how I saw it. It is about 14 minutes long..

I’ll have a look - thanks!

It was very suggestive but both of those artists are in their performances. Shakira a little less than Jlo . Jlo came across as very forced . She just did a stripper movie and I think she took it too much to heart :-) Not a family show .,,
