It’s a basic conundrum of life that continually confounds me- Why do people make choices NOT in their best interest so readily and with such frequency? There was a book about this out not too long ago in regard to the electorate’s voting patterns. People more often vote AGAINST their best interests rather than WITH them. Without getting into a whole anti-Republican Party spiel, that is the cornerstone of their electoral success. Smoke and mirrors, demagoguery, and scapegoating (i.e. immigrants, welfare recipients) mask the true intent of the party to continue the massive transfer of wealth into the upper crust of American society. The people voting Republican who are part of the middle to lower tax brackets are actually voting AGAINST their economic interests. The classic bait and switch- Guns, God, abortion- Get people riled up about social issues and then rob them blind.
Anyway, I digress. I was actually thinking on a much more personal level. The daily choices, both simple and profound, that we all make , that viewed thru pure logic make little sense. Lifestyle choices, dietary choices, employment choices, etc etc etc- we all are victims of unseen internal biases and prejudices and thinking with our hearts not our heads. Emotion overwhelms reason- time and time again.
The most confounding decisions are often the BIG ones- none bigger than who we decide to give our hearts to, and who we decide to partner with as we make our journey through life. The divorce rate alone will tell you how faulty our decision making is on this front- but what about the countless marriages that are unfulfilling, loveless, or simply just don’t work. How many people REALLY make a sound, logical decision in matters of love and commitment. And how many people continue to keep on digging themselves deeper while standing in a hole they will never find their way out of?
We are irrational creatures, and we see what we want to see and hear what we want to hear. For some reason, nature imbued us with tunnel vision and selective denial. We can’t decipher the true signals amidst the cacophony of discordant voices and clutter that permeates our brains. We lose access to our most basic instincts and decision-making processes because of all the extraneous and erroneous information floating inside our skulls.
We all have that one true voice- the Wise Mind- somewhere down there in the marrow of our being. How many of us actually listen to it?

If we do what is right for us, things will change. Change will result in the loss of the status quo, loss of friendships and uncertainty. Humans are programmed to obey their place in their tribe and those who seek change are viewed with suspicion and risk alienation... Which is no big deal now but we're living in a modern world with millions of years old bodies. Isolation 4 million years ago would've meant certain death.

You are confusing the "religious right" with the republican right. Also the basis for your argument is completely unsound. Those who vote democrat opt to give the government control over their lives, which marginalizes whatever interests are important to them and takes control of that out of their hands. There is no transfare of wealth that is undeserved. When you grow up and start try to start your own business you'll see how wrong your thinking here is.
