Name: Sweet D

Age: 44

Status: Divorced for a couple of years and recently broke up with a girlfriend of a little longer than a year. Been “single” for a month - only one month! Maybe even three weeks!

Job: Runs a “wellness” center in partnership with his brother. Also has a consulting business that’s pretty new-agey but sounds super interesting. Used to run innovation strategy for a few companies you’ve heard of.

Lives: In a neighborhood that I love - old, charming houses, etc.

Length of Date: 2.5 hours

We Did: He asked me to dinner rather late-ish (8pm - that’s late for me lately!) at this Mediterranean place pretty close to my apartment. He had reserved a private dining room that was candlelit and draped in luscious fabric and we sat on the velvet banquette together. We talked, toasted with champagne, ate a mezze platter and split a salmon dish. It was a wonderful place for a first date - romantic, tucked away, totally private and pretty damn sexy.

He Looked: Handsome. I personally know his brother, and I think he’s definitely a spruced-up version of his bro. It was COLD outside and he looked dapper in a Peacoat, dark sweater underneath and dark denim. Exceptionally friendly, dimpled-cheeked smile, beard and head stubble.

I Looked: I don’t know - I kind of threw myself together as I’ve been battling a weird cyst-like thing on my upper back for a week now. I’ve Googled and self-diagnosed myself into a frenzy (and YES, I have a dr. appointment scheduled next week), and I am just feeling super freaked out about it, so I spent an enormous amount of time over the weekend looking at it, taking pictures of it (back selfies?)and generally not getting a lot of stuff done, so of course, as I was getting dressed it was all I could think of. ANYWAY, I wore a super casual outfit of gray denim, gray-ish suede wedge boots and a black sweater, but I topped it off with my super furry muppet-looking coat, which he LOVED.

First Impression: In one word: SWEET. Absolutely a wonderfully NICE guy!

Convo: I was kind of all over the place, but that’s because I had a million things to talk about. Late last week I’d sent him a NYT article about sleep being luxury as a topic starter for our dinner, but we really didn’t need any help. Everything flowed.

High Point: He told me that I felt familiar to him - like meeting someone he already knew, and I felt exactly the same way! Honestly, the dude is completely adorable…and there was something about the way he dropped F-bombs that was sexy in that way when a nice guy lets them fly - there’s something absolutely charming about it. Is that weird?

Low Point: Thinking about that cyst-like thing during our dinner. And the weird fluctuating temperatures in the private room. First, waaaay too cold. Then, stiflingly hot, then…when they were trying to close the joint, it was the cleaning fumes that got to us!

How It Ended: He paid for dinner - he insisted. He walked me out to my car like a perfect gentleman. Told me he’d like to see me again…quick peck on the lips and then out of there. He texted me later with a sweet text about how it was nice to meet and that he was looking forward to spending time with me again. I texted back and basically said the same thing.

Chances Are: I’d go out again, 100%!

Date Rating: A solid B, but that was mainly for me not feeling awesome and being a little distracted.

Update Since the PB Outage: It has been cricket chirps since Sunday night and that had me a little bummed out. However, today I remembered that he’d told me that he was up against a HUGE deadline on Tuesday and a bunch of other stuff. So I decided to text, “Happy Friday! Hope the week was fantastic, including a smashing proposal and a nice Valentine’s Day! What a week!”

He wrote back immediately with good-to-hear-from-yous and more info about leaving town again on Tuesday and busy, busy, yada, yada and can we plan something for after the 27th, which works out well for me because I’m prepping for a HUGE sales meeting that starts on the 26th.

Sooooooo…whether he’s blowing me off or just super, super busy or whatever, I guess time will tell. All good. I like him and I’d love it if he liked me too, but if not, it’s okay and I will keep looking. Time will tell.
