Pledging Cont'd 10/5/2002
That night we had a lock-in. The sisters drove us, blindfolded to an untold destination, which turned out to be a really shitty motel. We had to do interviews with each other, make a pledge class collage, and paint our fingernails and toenails purple. They have to remain purple for the rest of pledging. It was not that bad of a night. The AC was turned up WAY too high, so for the two hours that we actually got sleep, I was shaking. Other than that, it ws cool. Me, Bridgette, and Lisa were all put in the same car, and we were holding hands the whole time. It was a nice feeling, to be comforted...
Some of my pledge sisters are starting to suck. Toni (Antonia)is a super-militant lunatic. She gives orders like crazy and if they're not followed to the letter, she rips you apart. I understand wanting to be a leader, but she gets way too ridiculous. According to her, she works the hardest, and we slack off.
Christine, Lauren, Sara, and Nicole all knew each other before they pledged. Lauren's nice enough, but I don't like Nicole at all. Theoretically, pledge sisters are supposed to comfort one another, but it doesn't seem to be looking that way. When I had gotten upset, Nicole says to me, "Well, you don't have to pledge." Um, that's not the point. The point is that I was publicly embarrassed and was treated unfairly. Just because I'm upset doesn't mean I don't want to pledge. The four of them are attached at the hip and it's kind of intimidating to talk to them sometimes.
I liked Tamar in the beginning. She gave me a hug when I was crying. Last night though, when we had a pledge activity, she made us late. She decided to go to Shabbat (holy Jewish) services that night and we couldn't find her. We were on-call, which means we must stay in our rooms in case a sister decides to call us and send us out on an adventure. The pledge mom calls us and gives us forty-five minutes to pack an overnight bag anf find some house on a street we've never heard of. We were all ready to go, except we couldn't find Tamar, who wasn't in her room and who wasn't answering her cell phone. We ended up finding her walking along on a highway from the Chabad house.
She refuses to compromise, which pisses me off more than anything. We all asked her if she could possibly leave services earlier from now on so we could be to our activity on time. (If we're late, we're given demerits, which I can't afford to have any more). She refused, saying that part bonding aspect of the Shabbat services is the meal. Honey, eat later. Matzah balls and noodles aren't worth it. Pledging is only a few weeks, you can live without Shabbat dinner for that long. We all have to give up stuff so we could pledge, that's the way it is. She could go to services on Saturday morning instead of Friday night, which would be a hell of a lot better, but she refuses to do that, saying its not the same. Um, ok. Services are services. You can still bond with the other Jews on Saturday morning.
But yeah...so luckily we didn't get demerits for being late. We had to write one of the sorority poems on posterboard using AlphaBits cereal. We had to make poster for each of the 40+ sisters with our Greek letters on them, plus posters for ourselves, but we had to spell it out. We could only use our two sorority colors, which was such a waste of construction paper. Then we had to make up a song and dance to be performed tonight in front of the sisters. Later on, this song and dance would be performed in front of frat boys at their parties. We were up til four in the morning, with Toni complaining that we weren't working hard enought the entire time. When I get into a really bad mood, on top of having massive sleep deprivation, I just get really quiet. I was sick of being yelled at by Toni, or being snubbed by Sara and Nicole. I just kept getting quieter and quieter. Tamar was being a raging bitch. To prevent Toni fro telling me that I wasn't doing anything I offered to help Tamar, and she just saying some nasty crap to me. I couldn't take it any more... By four in the morning, we all just passed out.
The next morning I was woken up by my pledge sisters. They were packing up and leaving the house. Now, the ones that had cell phones had set alarms so we could be out of there pretty early in the morning. I would assume that when they woke up, they would wake everyone else up. They didn't wake up me and Tamar for some reason. By the time I threw my stuff in my bag, everyone had gotten into their cars and left. Luckily, Corrine was still around and I got into her car. It pissed me off though...they just walked out and left.
Off to another pledge activity....
