My New Love in These Foolish Things

I’m back! What a trip!

I can’t even begin to tell you of the new super LOVE I have for Argentina! The trip was phenomenal and I feel like I need to spend some time processing it. Vacations are nice, for sure…but this left me with a feeling of longing. Kind of like I need to plan a trip like this every year, you know?

I’d never been to South America before, and I think that may have something to do with it. You know, the excitement of going somewhere you’ve never been before? Everything looked brand new and yet somehow reminded me of somewhere else, but not exactly!

Also, the cool thing about Argentina is that it doesn’t have as many places that are like the rest of the world. In other words, there’s not a Starbucks or a 7-11 or a McDonald’s or a GAP on every corner like most places I’ve visited in the world. One reason is because the import taxes are so high there. But I also think that there is so much pride in having exclusive Argentinian products and services that they just don’t want all of that stuff here. Granted, many of the places I’ve been in the world have been for business, so there’s a difference in the way I was looking at things, but it just seemed wonderfully much less Americanized to me (and yes, I know that South America is America, but you know what I mean).

And it was tons of fun to travel with our very own Elaine Benes! I’m not just saying that because she can read this - she’s an expert traveler and we are on the same page in so many ways that it really was nice to go places and see things with her. I’m glad I didn’t do this solo, but it was amazing in that we did this trip pretty much exactly as I would have wanted to do it in every way had I done it all by myself - no issues about how and where and when we would do stuff because we had planned it pretty fully before we got there (made many reservations and worked out most of the details in advance).

I loved the giant city of Buenos Aires - the people and the vibrancy and all of the different personalities of the different neighborhoods.

I also loved the small towns in the wine country of Mendoza with the vineyards and the small town vibe…OH and the snow-capped Andes Mountains just right there as a background to everything!

You guys, the food, the wine, the sights and smells. I want to write so much. I don’t even know where to begin!

But I need to get a few things done this morning before I do. Just wanted to pop on and say hello and that I’ve missed you (though Elaine and I did do a little bit of reading you while we traveled) and that I’m ready to start the NEW YEAR fresh!

Back soon!
