Point...? 8/14/2001

Work wasn't terrible today. The worst part about work is in the morning before the kids arrive. Most of the counselors who work there are from a nearby local high school so they all know each other. There are two groups: one group has three people in it: Holly, Gretchen, and Suzy. They're stunningly beautiful, snooty, and thin; my guess is that they're the "popular" crowd in their high school. The second group has about half a dozen people in it; most of them are nice. The thing is they all know each other and have their own private jokes and conversations, so it's really hard to talk to them. This morning I wasn't sitting totally by myself, but I was definitely kind of sitting off to the side playing Solitaire. Luckily, most of my kids came in later and we had a giant game of War going.

Two of my favorite campers came in today: Conner and his sister Rosie. They're both beautiful, sweet, extremely well-behaved children. They only come in once or twice a week, so I usually have good days when they come in. Conner's three; he has the fattest cheeks, the squeakiest voice, and the bluest eyes you've ever seen. He's not in my group, but he often comes to visit his sister Rose, so I get to hold hime a lot. Rosie is the perfect camper who loves to hold my hand; I want to adopt both of them. My devil child, Caleigh, came in today and ran away from me twice (once right in front of Diane). Let's not get into how I feel about Caleigh...

Megan, one of the sports camp counselors talked to me today. Megan's a sweet girl; she's one of the few counselors who's my age. I don't really get a chance to talk to her too much. When she and I stayed back from the Splish Splash trip we got to talk a little bit, but anyway...I was returning one of my camper's floaties to the lifeguard cabin and she was in there. We exchanged hellos and then she flat out asked me: "Are you coming back to work here next summer?" Megan is pretty close to Diane, so I tried to be vague. Megan tells me, "Well, I'm thinking of leaving. I'm only getting $1400 this year. I wanted a raise next year because I've been working here for three years, but Diane said no. Last summer the camp made $100,000 but this summer it only made like $60,000, so they can't afford to give anyone a raise." I started to tell Megan about the camp my sister works at, and how much everyone is paid. I definitely talked too much though...God help me if Megan repeated any of our conversation to Diane...Ah well, I won't be coming back anyway. So we were talking about the salary differences between our camp and Becca's camp, along with the amount of tips we would get. Megan and I definitely agreed that we were getting stiffed with tips...It was nice though to have a regular conversation with one of the counselors.

After speaking to Megan I definitely decided to switch camps. Most of the counselors here are nice, but the camp is too small, and God help you if you're new. Most of the staff has a parent working for the gym where my camp is located, or is related in some way to one of my bosses. A large chunk of the campers are children of my bosses or the gym staff. Obviously, none of these parents are paying customers, which doesn't help the camp's profit. More and more of my bosses' friends are bringing their children into the camp, most of which are also not paying. Because there are less people paying, the counselors are getting paid less. I once figured out that I'm getting paid approximately $2 an hour for the entire summer. Who wants to work for that? I have a feeling that this camp isn't staying in business for very long unless some changes are made. If you've been following my diary entries, you can also see how disorganized everything is. I might as well jump ship now...Yeah...I have no idea what the point of this diary entry was. I did have one when I started...

Until later
