I hate the first night away from home...they're usually the worst. The first night I was away, I cried myself to sleep. I had to get up at five a.m. that morning so I could be at my my by eight. This program had a really rigid schedule; it sucked. I missed breakfast that day which sucked even worse because I wasn't able to eat until really late in the day.
My Fourth of July was so-so. On the way to University of Maryland--College Park (one of our lectures was being held there) I sat next to the snobby southern belle, Kaitlin, and three of her snobby friends. They basically ignored me the entire trip. The lecture itself was interesting--it was about the history of medicine. I even took notes; aren't you proud? I was.
Anyway...We left the university after the lecture to go to Alexandria, Virginia to go shopping and eat lunch. Granted, NY has the best pizza, but the pizzeria in Alexandria came pretty damn close. On the way to Alexandria, I was sitting next to this fairly funky-looking chick named Amani. Her face wasn't weird, it was more her clothes...turtleneck and shorts...interesting combo...She was pretty nice though. She's from Portland, Oregon and is absolutely brilliant. She's fourteen and is going into her junior year.
Alexandria is this beautiful quirky little town with these quanit shops and pretty little townhouses. If you like to travel, I would definitely suggest that you go to Alexandria, Virginia for a visit. It figures...that was the one day I didn't bring my camera. In Alexandria I hung out with Tammy, Jessie, two of their friends, and Salma. It was fun...Something odd happened though. I stole a necklace from a shop. The last thing I stole was in fifth grade in Mastic, Connecticut on a school field trip. I have no idea why I stole that necklace. I just slipped it off the hook and put it in my bag...weird huh? I don't know, there are worse things I could have done, but it's just out of character for me. It's like I start to become someone else when I'm away. OPther than that, nothing really odd happened. I bought a monster White Russian ice cream cone from Ben and Jerry's...ahhh...the calming power of ice cream.
We got back onto the buses to go back to Maryland. There was supposed to be this monster fireworks display. Problem was that a monster rainstorm swept in and everything got cancelled. I spent my Fourth of July in an auditorium listening to music. The good part was that I met three friends through Amani. Sally, from Florida, Rumou aka "Ro" from Alabama, and Karen from Indiana. Ro was the first Chinese girl I'd ever met with a southern accent. Do you know how hard it is to try and understand someone with a Chinese and Southern accent?? It's a bitch; she was nice though, which was cool.
Once again, I did something out of character. There was some cool music playing in the auditorium and I froze up. I couldn't dance. Almost always, at parties back home I'm the first one on the dance floor and one f the last ones to get off. I can definitely hold my own on the dance floor. My three new friends kept trying to pry me out of my sitting position on the stage, but I just kind of shook my head and sat there. I have no idea why I act like that sometimes...
