Trip To SU 4/28/2001
My bus to Syracuse should've picked me up at 11 a.m., but it was running late and instead came at 12:00. I got to Syracuse at about 1:30, but didn't arrive at the university until 2:15.
Syracuse isn't like Binghamton where the university is ten seconds from the bus station. Instead, I had to take a 20+ minute cab ride in order to reach the university, which I wasn't too happy about. Syracuse is like an actual city, which is good and bad. It's good because the city provides all kinds of neat things off of campus, but it's bad because things aren't compact, like Binghamton.
Parts of Syracuse's campus are actually in the city...like I said, unfortunately, it's not all compact and together like Binghamton's campus. I guess I'll just do more exploring. I may have to take a bus to get to some of my classes. I'm deciding on whether I like this or not.
The actual campus is huge! It's split up into three parts, the main campus, the north campus, and the south campus. The main campus is where most of my classes are, the school book store, and all of the campus eateries are located. The north campus is where most of the lower classmen are housed, and the south campus is where all of the upper classmen are housed. I was on campus from 2:15 to 3:45, and I was able to explore about half the main campus. I also got lost a couple of times, but we won't go into that :o)
The campus truly is beautiful. They have all of these beautiful ornate statues on campus, with ivy covered buildings, and gardens, and most of the buildings are built like unique-looking castles. They were also doing some construction on the campus while I was there. From the main campus, I could see the north campus, where my future dorms were. Those dorms are absolutely huge. I have no idea how many stories they were, but if I could see them from the other side of campus, I'm figuring 20-30 floors. I didn't get to get any closer than that, because they were just too far away, and I was afraid of getting lost again. I'm deciding on whether or not I like all of these tall buildings. I mean, I'll probably get to meet more people, but even getting around inside them is going to be a hassle. God help me if the elevators break...
I didn't get to go on an actual tour, so I kind of made my own. I saw some people with their parents, which was kind of funny. All of the visitors were carrying aeound these big orange and blue maps, scratching their heads and looking lost. A really cute guy came up to me at one point, asking where a place to eat was. I just simply held up my map and sid, "I have the same map you do, I'm just as lost." It was pretty funny.
The $100 my dad gave me only paid for the round trip Binghamton ticket. (Actually, it was $108). The Syracuse ticket was $30, and the cab fares were $23 each. Thank God for the extra money my parents gave me, it saved my behind. If John, my fifteen year old brother comes up, I'm going to teach him how to take the metro. I should've taken the metro instead of the cabs, but I didn't know the stops or the schedule, and I was afraid to get lost in the city. Syracuse seems like a fairly safe city, but still....
