Tetrahydrocannabinol is the principal psychoactive constituent (or cannabinoid) of the cannabis plant. The pharmacological actions of THC result from its partial agonist activity at the cannabinoid receptor located mainly in the central nervous system, and the CB2 receptor, mainly expressed in cells of the immune system. The presence of these specialized cannabinoid receptors in the brain led researchers to the discovery of endocannabinoids.

THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects, and cannabis can be used to treat pain by altering transmitter release on dorsal root ganglion of the spinal cord and in the periaqueductal gray. Other effects include relaxation, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation. THC has marked antiemetic properties, and may also reduce aggression in certain subjects.

Strains have two major types. Most plants are hybrids.
