Yep, Sad to Say... in Everyday Ramblings

So yes, we made international news here in our barbarity. We get warmth and sunshine and a shirtless white supremacist goes berserk on a light rail train hurling insults at two young women that appeared to be Muslim and when some random men on the train confronted him to try to de-escalate the encounter he cut the throat of two complete strangers and wounded a third.

Earlier this week I heard a clip from Aziz Ansari’s monologue on Saturday Night Live the day of the Women’s March and he talks about this small group of people who feel emboldened by the election and think that it is okay to stop pretending that they are not racist.

He says in the monologue

that these people need to go back to pretending.

Apparently this individual that went nuts yesterday afternoon on public transportation didn’t get that memo. He has been quite outspoken and wraps himself in an American flag as he goes to rallies and yells obscenities at protesters.

Covered in blood after he got off the train he taunted the police to kill him. Yet another aspect of this all that makes me so sad is that if he had been black, they would have killed him.

Now we will incarcerate him and he will interact with other prisoners and my guess is that many in prison will see him as a hero. Telling it like it is…

This has not been a good week for young women. Sigh.

It has been beautiful here though. This morning Frida and Mrs. Sherlock picked me up after my Weight Watchers meeting and we went to a neighborhood in North Portland and mapped out a four mile flat hike for her to take a Trails Club group on this coming Wednesday.

We had fun. The gardens over there are marvelous and that is where we encountered this most unusual poppy. There were about four of them, just gorgeous in the morning light. We got to explore and take little side routes and walk down grassy alleys and take detours and wonder about history and provenance. It was a very grounding mindful activity and Frida was a good dog.

This weather is most unusual. It has been sunny all day! On a holiday weekend. Almost unheard of. And it is supposed to continue through tomorrow.

I am still having some discomfort since I got my stitches out so I am keeping a relatively low profile and enjoying as much light as I can.

If all I do is wander around for the next few days and take more pictures I am absolutely fine with that. :)

Oh your photo!

What you wrote! Life is so complex and ugly too often now.
I'd have loved that walk, so happy for you. Glad the stitches are out.

I have had to put severe limits on watching the news, while still reading enough to stay informed. It's walking the line between severe anxiety and a bit of understanding that this will pass. The problem is that evil in many variations will always exist in our lifetimes and we are fighting to change the balance between love for mankind and those that choose hate.
