Well, I started an entry yesterday about the joys of a fresh, clean new month and how the outlook always looks rosy on the first day of the month. It’s like having a new start.
But of course, life happens.
It’s still all fine and good, but it’s so funny how one dumb (and I mean STUPID) email from someone can throw your day for a loop. It’s actually kind of laughable. If you don’t work with a TV personality or other kind of “celebrity”, consider yourself lucky. If you do, bless you, for you probably know the unique kind of torture that goes along with it. Or maybe you don’t? Because see, when someone who does one thing in the public eye (such as, act or dance or even preside over a country, maybe?) and then they try to do something like design a product when they don’t understand manufacturing or the cost implications, it gets really, REALLY tricky. And when BIG personalities think they know everything, it’s hard to talk them out of what they want. Problem is, a company could possibly go broke trying to appease a celebrity…but if the company doesn’t comply, then the deal could be off.
See what I mean? Complicated.
Anyway. What else is new?
Had my meeting with BIL (The Billionaire, for those of you who might not remember some of the characters here). It ended up being early - as in, 7:30am early - on Saturday morning and that was just fine/perfect for me as I had no plans for Friday night and wouldn’t be sleeping in on Saturday. He asked me to meet him at The Ritz, where he’s staying while his mansion (I presume) is being renovated. Funny, but the hotel restaurant was also being renovated, so instead of me buying him breakfast as a thank you for meeting with me, we ended up going up to the executive suite where there was coffee and breakfast and all the luxuries an executive might require.
Our meeting went much, much differently than our dates did. By differently I mean that he wasn’t asking rapid-fire questions as if he were auditioning me to maybe play a role in his life. He didn’t know what I was asking him to meet about so he let me take the reins and lead the meeting, and that felt good. He wasn’t leering at me like he kinda did before. There was no funny business. The vibe was businesslike, and that’s what I wanted.
We shot the shit for a little while, catching up, and then we got down to the brass tacks of why I was there. I wanted advice. I wanted to know how he got into a position where he is (which is still a little cloudy to me…he runs some kind of investment organization where he and a group of people travel to exotic locations, finding companies and entities to pour their millions into).
We talked for about an hour and in the end, I got some good advice about the potential next steps in my career, which all would involve me taking big steps, of course. But if I’m going to do this, I MUST take big steps. I do think that going and talking with that company in CA was a big step, but I NEED to make sure that I don’t just let that opportunity fade into the sunset. So…I need to outline what my future looks like. Something like this:
- Current company sells
- Understand what is required to get a payout
- During this time, keep connecting with CA company
- During this time, network with other companies (people who know people, etc…attend events, talk, talk, talk!)
- Discuss consulting with CA company and others
- Discuss potentially moving into consulting role with current company
- Have 3-4 companies to consult
- Voila! New gig!
Yes, I know it’s not that easy, but an outline is a start. And at least I have an end goal.
I need to run, but please don’t let me forget to write about the OTHER interesting meeting I had over the weekend…with SexyPants!!!
Gotta go!
xox,
GS
