I somehow missed a phone call on Friday. It was from my dad. He was calling to tell me that one of his good friends passed away. This guy was also one of my favorite friends of my parents’. One time, when I lived in the Great Midwest, he’d come to visit on a work trip and I took him out and got him totally schnockered and we’ve been buds ever since! We really liked each other a lot and always had fun things to talk about. I loved to go visit him and his wife when visiting my parents.
I don’t know how I missed the call, but I finally got the voice mail on Sunday.
So I called him back and we just chatted and chatted. I was trying to get info on a funeral when my phone rang again. I saw that it was an old friend who rarely calls me and I thought that I’d call her back after dad and I got off the phone.
But I was drained after my dad and I talked, and I went to sleep and forgot about the phone call.
On Monday as soon as I got home I checked my FB and there were posts about my friend Lovely Leah and her husband and the “thoughts and prayers” phrase…and my heart sunk. Oh no. What’s happened.
I went to Lovely’s FB page and someone had posted something in Portuguese (her family) and had posted a bunch of photos and tagged her daughter. I got an idea.... I went to Lovely’s daughter’s Instagram and there…there were the RIP messages. Oh no. LOVELY’S DAUGHTER!!
Finally, I got to the voice mail from the old friend, who’d been leaving a message about Lovely’s daughter while I was talking with my dad about the death of our buddy.
Flurries of phone calls.
Drives back and forth to Lovely’s.
Changing of flights for my business trip this week. Friends flying in. So much blur.
I will never ignore my voice mail again.
xox,
