Prom was last night. I went to school and had three normal classes. Then everyone got dismissed and I hung out in French doing nothing with Julian, Madame Belakanovski, and the two sophomores in the class. Then, taking advantage of the fact that the school was completely empty, I went down to guidence to fix some schedualing issues. (There are always schedualing issues. It is pretty much a scientific law within our school.) Then I went to work, which went well because I was working with the nice people. (Lauren, Sam and Jake.) Then I hung around doing nothing and being mildy depressed. Then I went to bed. Then at about one o'clock, I woke up and headed over to Dave's house, which is where Dave, Molly, Valerie and Valerie's date went after prom to avoid the vast amounts of alcohol which were undoubtedly being consumed at the party where all the rest of the band kids were.

This was not very exciting at all. I asked Molly and Dave how the prom was. They said that it had been fun. I asked what happened. They said not too much. They danced a little. They ate a little. They took an AP chem group picture wearing safety goggles and watched people who are bad at dancing (Mr. Wells, Matt, Rob, Ivy's new, possibly autistic boyfriend) try to dance. They hung out with Eric and Alice before Eric and Alice went to the band party to consume alcohol. That was it. That was all they said. Then we talked about random stuff for a few minutes, and then Molly borrowed some of Dave's pajamas and changed into them (kind of sketchy) and then we watched King Kong. Valerie and Valerie's date showed up right as we were starting the movie, so I really didn't talk to either one of them at all.

King Kong is an incredibly silly movie. If someone were to ask me "how silly is King Kong?" I would say, "King Kong fights three T-Rexes at the same time." Also, Adrien Brody can do everything, including write plays, scale sheer rock walls with his bare hands, fight off police to get into restricted areas when no one else can, and fight velociraptors with no weapons, and win. Throughout the movie, I made fun of the fact that Adrien Brody could do everything. I realized that most of the reason I kept talking about it is because I was getting really really hot for Adrien Brody. I hope it was not obvious.

Seriously, it was ridiculous. Adrien Brody is quite possibly the sexiest human being on the planet. Even moreso than Colin Firth. Every time he came on camera, it was like, "Jesus Christ, Adrien Brody is sexy," to the point where I was saying to myself, "What is wrong with you? Just watch the movie." I was trying to decide whether the reason I found him ridiculously sexy had something to do with the fact that he looks a little bit like Julian. I concluded that it did. Even so, I still couldn't really put my finger on what it is about them that is so similar. Since King Kong got really boring after a while (a good two hours of the movie was just people being chased by things) I amused myself by making a mental Adrien/Julian comparison. (Actually, I don't really know anything about Adrien Brody, so I'm talking about his character here. But I will continue to refer to him as Adrien Brody anyway.)

Adrien: Long, thin face. Permanent look of helplessness in eyes. Smile really adorable when slight and really goofy when full fledged.

Julian: Ditto, ditto, ditto.

Adrien: Renowned playwright.

Julian: Certified math genius, existentialist and reader of ridiculously large books.

Adrien: Punches velociraptors in the face.

Julian: Um... Plays the saxophone?

Adrien: Pretty muscley.

Julian: Freakishly emaciated.

Adrien: Gives soul-melting kisses to girl he's known for a week. Later risks his life to save her from a giant killer monkey.

Julian: Rendered unable to speak for several minutes by the words "I like you" coming from girl he's known for five years. Later stops hanging out with her so much.

After some extensive fantasizing about both of them, I came to the conclusion that Julian is still sexier than Adrien, solely because of item #3. Maybe if I ever see The Pianist there will be some contest. But right now there's not.

the goofy smile

Anyway, Valerie and her date both fell asleep in seperate chairs about ten minutes into the movie. Then at some point when I said something and no one responded, I realized that Molly and Dave had fallen asleep in each other's arms. Her head was resting on his chest and he was holding her with one arm while stroking her hair with the other. This is when I was I was violently jerked out of my very involved and pretty amusing thought process by sudden, terrible loneliness. I may have said aloud, softly, "you lucky, lucky bastards." I stopped watching King Kong and started watching the sky get lighter and lighter as rain continued to beat against the window. It has rained almost continuously all week. I watched it become morning as stuff got smashed and shot at and Adrien Brody climbed to the top of the empire state building. It was probably about 5:30 when I sensed that Dave was awake again, still holding Molly close to him, stroking her hair a little more actively and looking at her with an expression on his face that I don't think I could describe if I tried. Valerie and Valerie's date woke up just before the end of the movie and went home. Molly decided to go home too. She offered me a ride. I declined. I didn't want to go home. She and Dave walked to the door together, talking to each other and joking like they normally do, except that before she went out into the rain, still wearing his pajamas, she threw herself into his arms wholeheartedly enough for me to know that the prom meant something more to both of them than a little dancing and a little food. They held each other for a few seconds and he watched her leave. He came back into the living room and sat on the couch where she had been, and the two of us sat there in darkness and silence for several minutes.

"So why didn't you get a ride with Molly?"

"I don't feel like going home."

"Oh. Well... You should probably call your parents."

"Oh. Right I... I guess you probably want to sleep. I'll call." I did. There were five or ten more minutes of complete silence, and the sky turned to an even lighter shade of gray as it continued to pour. The house was cold and quiet. The only light came from the window and the only sound was the rain.
