On alternate days, our lunch table consists of Alicia, Vajrah, Valerie, RJ, Dave, Julian and me. This is how things have been going lately: Alicia, Vajrah and Valerie obsessively talk about the prom. RJ and Julian watch the conversation with amusement, and when things get particularly silly, perodically congradulate each other on having decided not to go. I talk to Dave about whatever, and Alicia periodically interrupts us to tell us exactly how we will go about dealing with the prom. (I will find a date. I will have my hair done. Julian, are you sure you don't want to go? Dave will not buy a white tux, or a blue tux, or an orange tux. In fact, she is coming shopping with both of us. "And I can't believe my little sister didn't tell me she was going with you!")
So anyway, once during one of these discussions, Valerie turned to me and said, "Oh, Aidan, do you have a date yet?"
"Oh, I forgot," I said. "Hold on."
I slid my chair over to the table next to ours and said, "Hey T.K, want to go to the prom with me?"
"What, really?"
"Yeah."
"Oh, alright! I kind of have to work on my parents though. They think I'm going to get drunk and die or something."
"Oh. Well I mean, we're probably going to be going in Molly's van. Your parents kind of know Molly, right? I mean, she's a band geek - they know she's trustworthy, right?"
"I dunno. I still have to work on them. But yeah, I'll go"
"Alright, cool beans. I guess I'll talk to you about it later."
I slid back over to our table. "Ok, I'm going to the prom with T.K." Most people laughed. Julian didn't.
There are a lot of maybes here - T.K.'s parents are apparantly pretty strict, and people going with underclassmen get last dibs on tickets. But I'm not really that worried about it, since I was considering not going anyway. I guess whatever happens happens, and if I buy a dress it'll have a return policy. I guess T.K. is actually circulating a "let T.K. go to prom" petition which he will present to his parents as soon as he has the signatures of a lot of random people. I should probably find him and sign it some time.
In other news, Mr. Casto is putting together combos for jazz night - he picks some of the better people from both bands, puts them in small groups, practices with them once, and lets them perform without interfering much. I asked him to consider putting me in one on flute, and he gave a kind of wishy washy answer at the time. But he did! And I'm in one! It's a flute feature, so I'm the only horn, and it's looking like the whole thing is essentially going to be me taking a solo for as long as I want. And when we ran though it yesterday (without the rest of the combo - I'm actually not sure who the rest of the combo is going to be at this point) both Mr. Casto and the JV jazz band guy seemed impressed. I know that this should not be a big deal, since it is only one song, I am only in it because I asked, and NOBODY goes to jazz night anyway. But I am still wicked frickin' excited about it. The song is Black Orpheus. I like it.
More later.
