(Can you win the awkward game with an entry title? Because I think I just did.)
Anyway, got the official jazz band list. Good jazz band is as follows:
Sax: Jay, Mike, Julian, RJ, and Schultz Trumpet: Jason, Alice, Eric, and Evan Desmond Trombone: Me, Dave and Valerie Rhythym: Rob, Noah, Insane pianist, Annoying guitarist and kid I've never heard of.
So basically, everyone is going to be amazing except us. Hm. I'm going to have to do a ridiculous amount of practicing if I want to impress certain people. Oh well. At least we'll be the amazing ones in the sucky band. (Yeah, we all told Mr. Casto we'd be in both. In the email, he called us the "double duty bones." I'm sorry, but that just sounds wrong.)
I talked to Julian about it in physics when we were supposed to be doing worksheets.
Him: So is there anyone good in the sucky jazz band?
Me: Well, there's that band kid we call Speedy. He's pretty good from what I've heard of him. Actually, you've heard him - he was warming up in the band room the day we tried out.
Him: Oh yeah. He did seem pretty good.
Me: He's only a freshman too. He's really good for a freshman.
Him: ...I think he likes Paul Desmond.
Me: Who?
Him: Oh just... Sax guy. He sounded like him.
Me: Wait, you can tell that just from having heard him warm up in the band room?
Him: Well, it's mostly just a guess, but you can do it with most people. Like after Mike played the talent show, I went up to him and said, "Do you like John Coltrane?" And he was like, "Yeah."
There was a pause.
Me: So do you play like... Is yours... Charlie Parker?
It was almost like he'd been expecting me to ask this, but at the same time was slightly embarrassed by it. He smiled and lowered his eyes and said something like "I can only hope."
So, for some reason, I find this unbelievably cute. (Almost as cute as the time he said that if he could sing, he'd probably be better at skatting than improving on sax because "there's nothing between you and the music." melt) And... I'm fighting the urge to go out and buy another Charlie Parker CD. And by "buy," I mean, "borrow one from the library and illeagally burn it."
On a different note, I should really practice that music I have to play for church. Um... The music that I got yesterday and have to play tomorrow. Yeah, that music.
I'm screwed. But then again, I'm always screwed.
