It has occoured to me that I have not written an entry about my actual day to day activities in quite a while, and that I need to do some updating.
Alright, so first of all, Music in the Community has really taken off, and even Paul has admitted that I am now one of its leaders. I've gotten quite good at fielding calls and being diplomatic. We have about ten students now, and we're working on setting up somewhere to give lessons besides the people's houses. We could actually have, like, a Music in the Community headquarters. I had my first lesson yesterday - flute. It's wierd when the person doesn't know anything about music theory and you really have to start from scratch, but I think I did surprisingly well, and I know the girl did surprisingly well. She managed to produce a somewhat breathy B flat. I know I didn't do that on my first flute lesson. Her mother said she was shy, but she was a hell of a lot more friendly than the girl I used to give guitar lessons to. She even went outside and waved to me as I drove away. I like her. We'll call her Leah.
Also, the battle of the bands has been reschedualed! Yay! This means: 1. A chance at glory and riches 2. Lots of jam sessions 3. An excuse to hang out with Julian.
I have been hanging out with him, but there is a definate awkwardness to things, and I've found that making music with someone is excellent for eliminating awkwardness. And I'm not even being that shallow, ok? He's a cool person in general and I like working with him.
This week and next are MCAS. (standardized test.) I kind of like it, actually, because it's wicked easy and it gets me out of class. Not just that either - it disrupts everything, and when everything is disrupted, school has a more relaxed feel to it. In math every day I've just been talking to Evan Desmond, Eric and Lilly, who is one of those people who thinks I am funny. (I like those people.) She's stopped lecturing, for some reason, so the class basically goes like this: everyone talks, one person does the assigned work, and then everyone copies off of that one person. Hey, works for me.
Special K (the nickname Dave has assigned our Latin teacher, Mr. K.) has pretty much given up too. We are watching the emperors club, one of those "teachers who makes a difference" movies, which is funny because Special K exhibits none of the qualities than any teacher in any "techer who makes a difference" movie would ever have ever. We've been playing Bingo lately in class, based off of things he does. Like, one square is him calling Molly Aidan, one is making an obscure refference to Greek, one is appologizing for something unnessescarily... you get the point.
Today was actually not a great day, just because everyone was insulting my musical ability. Seriously, I got one per instrument today. Ok, the trumpet insult was justified, but the guitar and flute insults weren't. Pf. Just because I didn't get into jazz band. And Molly's never even heard me play flute. EVER.
After my trumpet lesson (I SUUUUUCCCKKK.) Adam came into the band room and we jammed on the piano for a bit. Like I said, music makes all awkwardness go away. Mr. Thomas was there, and I'm glad he knows that we're ok with each other. I was afraid that if Adam got drum major, I might never get assistant because of (somewhat understandable) suspicians on Mr. Thomas' part that we might not be able to work together. But we can work together. Despite the fact that when he left the room and left his oboe case open on the table, I got the fleeting urge to break his reed in half.
(Oboe. Who plays that?)
I have a guitar lesson now, and then I'm going to see the concert band and orchestra at school. Molly told me to come hear how hillarious the orchestra is trying to play "It don't mean a thing." I imagine it will be pretty hillarious.
